Actually, only mini donkies legs are short
Normal donkies legs are about the same as a horse of the same size (except finer boned).
It's the head that's "out of propportion" compared to horses .

I *believe* they're about 12-13 hands high (about the size of a Welsh mountain pony), though I could be wrong .
They're certainly not overly big, but their bodies are thicker than a pony (so as they can carry more weight).
Mules are about the size of large ponies
