Description
How lazy of me to submit a work in progress.... but it's been a busy weekend. I shouldn't even be working on this, I'm going to be up all night with homework. So as you can see, I've been diligently procrastinating this weekend, and I read Howl's Moving Castle. Fans of the movie should defintely check out the book: it is absolutely wonderful and quite different in places.
Etc. Howl and Sophie. They were fun to draw. Howl is such a bastard and Sophie is such a nag. Hopefully I can find time to finish it properly sometime this week. There's hardly any Howl fanart on deviantart that isn't modeled after the movie!

That's because I'm dumb, and the name of the book is actually Castle in the Air. +_+

Do you think you'll ever finish this piece?

Wellll.... probably not. I did that so long ago, which mean that I've given myself plenty of time to decide that I could have done it better. +_+ What I might do though is make a few more illustrations... at the moment I'm doing a few little things here and there to fill out my portfolio. Some HMC illustrations might be just the thing....

That's understandable. Will you let me know if you do anymore HMC illustrations? It's my current obsession (I read the book a few days ago)and there isn't much book fan art to be found.

I watched the movie just the other day, which made me want to read the book again, and I just finished that up this morning.
I love both versions, because, like you said, they are different enough to be enjoyable separately, rather than compared. And the book is just a riot.
Anyways, this is just the picture I was looking for, about as romantic as the book gets ^^. I love the style, and you captured their personalities perfectly. (And Howl's sleeves are long! Finally! No one ever draws the long sleeves!)

hahaha.
They are quite different in the book- but no less delightful. I enjoyed both immensely, but in completely different ways.
You definitely captured the spirit of the book version, 100%. I love Sophie's mean old lady expression.

Some book fanart!
God, these are so cute! I just adore Howl's cocky expression, and Sophie's ">:[" face made me laugh.
Also, I want to steal his clothes. D:

Personally, I prefer the book over the movie so It's neat to see them drawn differently from how the movie portrayed them

Very cute -- and I, too, loved the book -- I work in a bookstore and it's actually my staff pick in the kids dept. this month. And the movie. Rare that happens -- usually it's 'love the book don't hate the movie' at best...though at least once the opposite.
But with Howl's Moving Castle, it's like Miyazaki read the book and thought, 'gee...that's cool. I would like to make a movie, but here's how I see it through my twisted mind. And it needs more things oozing.'
Anyway, I ramble.

I love seeing fanart from the book. I love the movie and all, but the book is way too great to just pass by.
Your designs are amazing. Something I've never seen, and I like that.

Your characters are awesome. And they just keep getting better and better. You've struck the perfect chord between rendered and cartoony (a look i've been working at, to no avail, for years...)

so true concerning the book, it is far more complex from what the film showed, nevertheless the film has the merit to send people to read the book; and maybe we should keep them as totally separated universes.
your pic of these two has a lot of merit capturing the personalities -an aspect at least - from the book, the apparent unpleasant disposition of Sophie towards Howell at the begining of their relationship, and Howl's vanity. the way you have drawn their is perfect. I love particularly the "sketchiness" of the pic, for a moment I thought it was done in traditional medias as oil pastels. now I must visit your gallery.

I'm serious when I say that this is probably the best fanart of the book I've ever seen. Hell, this is hella more awesome than most fanart for the movie β₯ Howl is just so FANTASTICALLY DORKY and your orgasmtastic colouring, no matter how WIP, is so delicious ;;
I adore your skintones <3<3

i love this movie. i started reading the book, but it was too slow in the beginning, so i put it down. ; ;
i have a hard time getting into books if its slow in the beginning. D:
but hayao miyazaki is my hero. he is by far my most fave director ever. <3
you did a great job capturing their personalities. XD

I love those expressions! Your style for drawing faces has always made me so very happy for some reason.
The movie rather disappointed me with its too-good ending among others, although something tells me Disney would have done worse (maybe not Bluth though, if he still did movies these days). But I think a trip to the library for me is long overdue as the original story rather sounds like my cup of tea.

The original story is excellent! It opens with a discussion of fairy tale rules: that is, because Sophie is the eldest of three daughters, she is destined to have a boring future. The ending is a bit rushed, but it's such a clever fun book I didn't really care.
I didn't really mind Miyazaki's movie too much... I almost like that it was so different. Then it's like I get to enjoy two different stories! I'm not really sure who I think would do a good job of it... I'm sure Disney would have to sanitize it up a bit with Calcifer being a demon and all, and Howl getting drunk that one time... plus they'd have to tone down all the mention of witchcraft, I'm sure. Might make a cute live-action movie in the hands of the right director....
ooh! Like Terry Gilliam. Yes. That's what I vote for.

Gilliam! He'd have my vote too
I did like the movie as a whole, I just had some criticism about some parts- may have sounded a bit harsher than I meant to there. Miyazaki's one of my favorite directors, I guess recognizing the weaker parts of some of his films is as much my way of showing respect as it is enjoying them, which I do.
And yep, life needs lysol sometimes but I think Disney uses waaaay too much, I'm kind of glad that Hayao beat them to it.
I hear Kiki's Delivery Service was much the same way, apparently the author didn't like it. But, the movie and book series as separate pieces are both classics, so things even out in that respect, and I'll probably notice the same with Howl too.
Come to think of it, I think Disney is planing to make their own live action Kiki's Delivery Service. I guess they've finally stopped trying to publicly prove that they've run out of ideas >

Haha...your Sophieβs face is the best thing since sliced bread.
Hmm...My friend said that I should read the book...(she says that movie sucked...and now that I think about it...it truly wasnβt the bestβ¦I bet Disney or DreamWorks could do better)
