Description
How lazy of me to submit a work in progress.... but it's been a busy weekend. I shouldn't even be working on this, I'm going to be up all night with homework. So as you can see, I've been diligently procrastinating this weekend, and I read Howl's Moving Castle. Fans of the movie should defintely check out the book: it is absolutely wonderful and quite different in places.
Etc. Howl and Sophie. They were fun to draw. Howl is such a bastard and Sophie is such a nag. Hopefully I can find time to finish it properly sometime this week. There's hardly any Howl fanart on deviantart that isn't modeled after the movie!

I love the book version of these characters ten times more than the movie versions. ^-^ Thank you for drawing them as they should be.

Silver and blue costume...trailing sleeves with scalloped edges...I really like how you paid special attention to the details. <3 Also, the characterization in your faces is fantastic. Most people would draw older people the same as they do younger people with lines, but Sophie definitely has her own look to her, complete with personality!

I've always preferred the book versions to their movie counterparts, so seeing this really put a smile on my face. Its a shame that the book is still often ignored despite how ultra popular Miyazaki is. Ah, oh well! At least I got this gem to look at ;D

I totally agree with your definition of Howl & Sophie xD I love the book and I like the movie too, but I prefer to not make comparisons between theme too many differences..
btw I really loved finding a fanart inspired by the book that's exactly what I was looking for ΓΉwΓΉ

I love your renditions of Howl and Sophie. Howl has that foppish bragadocious air whilst Sophie is the epitome of shrewish old nag. Kudos to you for this little delight!

I've read the book many times and it is so different than the movie! So I really love how you portrayed them here! So perfect!
And is it just me or did his eyes change colors in the book? At first they are green then they are blue, it seemed.

My favorite thing about this picture is that the writing looks kind of like Dr. Seuss's. That's a compliment, by the way.
Awesome job with Howl! He's such a bastard child, but you can't help but love him. <3

I love the difference between them the way you've drawn it! I honestly can't believe this is a WIP, I think it works great as it is ^^ I think his pose is my favorite part
It is refreshing to see fanart that doesn't use the Howl from the movie ^^ It's nice to see peoples' more imaginative take on him (if that makes sense)

Sophie is not amused BX

This is such a fun picture. I'd already loved the book for years before the movie came out - it is, in fact, my favorite book - so it's nice to find some fanart not based on the movie, which disappointed me by changing so much.

cute :#
i think i should've seen the movie first
the book was...let's just say OMGILOVEITSOMUCH. XP
the movie sorta disappoiinted me, but i dont knw, i think i have a problem. i just wish they explained some things and that they showed more of howl and sophie's personality (and i'm totally confused on the with of the waste and prime minister lady )
so anyway
glad to see aome art based on the book D
been planning to make some for a while
aaah taking up too much space
anyway, LOVELY art :3

Well, anyway, it's wonderful; there IS way too little book fanart these days. I LOVE the scowling Sophie...she was so huffy and indignant around Howl!

bluesun777 [2009-01-27 00:22:22 +0000 UTC]
yay! it's true. i love it when fanart is original and not movie-modeled. there's nothing wrong with the latter, of course, but it's no fun. the movie is how Hayao Miyazaki saw the characters. it's his style. it's like looking for Harry Potter fanart and getting pictures of Dan Radcliffe. i love to see other people's own interpretations. this is very good, by the way. huzzah!
also, in the book, do u know why the witch curses sophie to begin with?

littlecrow In reply to bluesun777 [2009-01-27 20:29:47 +0000 UTC]
Hrrrm. It's been a while since I read the book. Hm, well the witch realized from the bat that Sophie had magic abilities, even if Sophie didn't, and was it either that she was jealous/nervous about it, or was it just the result of the argument she and Sophie got into? It never really said specifically, did they? The Witch just does bad crap like that I guess, lol.
π: 0 β©: 1
BlueBumbleBee In reply to bluesun777 [2009-04-30 19:29:35 +0000 UTC]
She cursed Sophie because she thought she was Lettie, who had a knack for sorcery. Apparently Lettie was talked about and word got to the witch. That's why she addressed Sophie as "Miss Hatter"; she thought Lettie was trying to become powerful enough to rival the witch.

Book fanart! Now there's something you don't see every day. Man, the book was so great... totally understandable that all that awesome wouldn't fit into a movie.

You know, I preferred every single thing about the book, (god the black door that leads to modern Wales, that was so damned cool....) except for the ending. I thought it was a bit abrupt. Have you read the sequel? Is it good as well?

There's a sequel? I must get my hands on this...
