no - wasn't born with it.but i was born naked and unclothed,
and i learned how to wear those too.
everywhere i go:
"my that's bold"
"i love that color"
"hey, red"
when i stand out now
it is only because i spent so much time
standing IN.
i go on a stream of mental rolodex
--- dark and distant from here and now
find the next rabbit hole
and look back at the reflection
of my old eyes, sometimes.
underneath all that hair
what i used to wear as a mask
i vaguely remember what it was like to be trapped,
shy and embarrassed of my mouth
like beestung black honey,
fearful of where my eyes were directed when i spoke,
swimming under the red veils of discomfort
i don’t know why it even occurs to me now.
it grew VERY long.
i cut it.
i cut it again to a pixie.
it has grown back,
long again,
like a ruby pelt.
But all girls should learn these things:
How to eat pomegranate without a knife.
How to be a feared goddess.
How to look stately and undaunted
when the boy covets your affections
How to open ketchup packets
. . . with your teeth.

This is a beautiful picture; there's just such great color and contrast between the red and the black. Might I ask which of those hair colors is being displayed in this photograph? I was going to try Malaysian Cherry myself...

wow...I'm touched by the description, first of the photo looks awesome. Second I've been dying my hair red lots lately but I would love it to be the shade of red you have. Is it that red or have you made it a bit redder in photoshop?well anyway I'd love a colour like that, hopefully I can achieve it

I certainly got some tips from that.
I want to die my hair a real red - my hair's like medium brown naturally. But I don't really want to use permanent dies because it'll wreck my hair.
I usually do rinses but they seem to just go so quickly, a few people have suggested using henna because its good for your hair and lasts a bit longer - what do you think?

Permanent dyes do not wreck your hair, per se. Agreeably, some are more harsh with Ammonia & Arylamines than others, but you could certainly switch up with semi- and demi-permanent colors in between if youre worried about it.
What wrecks your hair is over washing it, especially with inferior shampoos & conditioners that have stronger chemicals in them. i suggest salon grade shampoos and conditioners, with a weekly deep conditioning treatment at home to maintain health.
As for Henna - just because something is 'natural' doesnt mean it's good for you necessarily. Actually - Henna has differrent color outcomes and results - for some is addes lustre and volume, for others, the hair becomes drier and more brittle. There are also grades of Henna so do your homework on EVERYTHING before arriving on something or some brand to use.

I sure will do my homework and find out about Henna, I may still try it - if it doesn't work out how I wanted then I wont use it again. I use rinses a lot, they seem good because they add colour and shine and condition my hair really well. I can get one of those a week for $4 lol but that's why I was thinking of doing something a bit more permanent. Ah well I'll still have a think about it

You go, girl! I used to have hair that red. But school had a fit and told me to dye it back (Which I did. Only because I have GCSEs this yuear and can't afford to get suspended! I'm already behind... oh dear!) So it'll go red again once I leave.
I love your expression in this, congrats for being able to shine two desk lamps at yourself and not squinting did you see spots afterwards? :lo: The red... It stands out a lot against the black and looks gorgeous!
