Description I'm actually working on some other pictures, but while nothing wants to work like I want it to, I've always drawn some round elemental beased material studys to distract me. And now that all four are finished I can show them to you

What is your favourite element? Mine is water and second would be air ^^

I hope it's okay if I use this image on a slide for a church service and my Unitarian Universalist church tomorrow. I am giving the service on the earth-based religious sources in the UU Church, If not please tell me. Of course I will mention on the slide that it is your art.

What an unusual idea to depict the four elements based on the shape of a sphere... and (I totally agree with JG1723 here) a great study, in colours, texture and light.
If I had to pick a 'personal' favourite element (like in "What would that little witch/druid inside of you feel drawn to?" Β ) it would probably be earth (humus) because that's what plants grow from and what they turn into Β , and then water because it's the source of life. In your picture, however, I like fire best!Β  You can practically hear those embers popping with the heat.

In your picture, yes, definitely fire (the glow from within)! Β Β  And second, air, I simply love the idea of this little tornado trapped in a bottle (and the way you painted it, with this transparent sheen)! Β  Β
Personally, if there's the choice between six elements ("splitting" earth into humus and stone, and adding ice to water) I always go for ice. So in this case, I'm a water person, too, I guess... Β  Β

Hey kabacalyaan and bifishiar
The idea may not be that unusual if I tell you I've started these studies with an eye. And eyes have the shape of a sphere, and that's why the rest is round too xD
And again it's really interesting that you like fire in this picture again, because that's the one I've drawn with the least motivation and effort
And bifishiar if you split two elements you have to split the other two too or the balance of the world will break! Β  I've once tried this for a story and I ended up with steam and ice, sand and stone, heat and light and well air causes me some problems... maybe wind and pressure? Β

Ohh NO, we can't let that happen!Β  Β
Rest assured, though, the six elements are not from this world, but another (it's a RPG universe). But I'm interested in your idea of having eight of them... Let's see. How about adding space/the void to the wind? (That's what the buddhists do, isn't that so?) Β
When you pair steam with ice, I thought this might be the start of a cycle (adding fire to water to make steam, stone turning into sand...), but this probably works best for the Chinese set of five: wood > fire > earth > metal > water. Very philosophical questions...Β Β

Puh, so there's still hope for our universe
I don't really know what the buddhist or chinese thinking of elements is or how it works but for me there are mainly the four elements. And when I tried to expand them to eight I tried to find something like two sub-categories to each element. Like water can come in the appearance of not just water, but ice or steam, but they are still some kind of water. Or in case of fire the two main attributes that fire has, it is hot (heat) and bright (light). (The actual idea to this started easy said with 8 people who can control one element like in "avatar legend of aang" but each has a special way of using and manipulating their element, thought they possibly could use it like the other person too. For example if you can control water you can control ice and steam too) That's why I thought of the movement of the air, the wind and the amount of air in a certain space, the pressure. I'm not sure if you mean that with space/the void or if mean it in the more philosophical way of the possibility for something to be there
And for the chinese set of elements I don't really understand why metal is separated. For me it is a more compact kind of earth (maybe because of the avatar series ) and wood is for me a form of life which is created by the elements. A plant needs earth, water, air and the sunlight (and the sun is a big ball of fire) to grow. And putting the elements in a cycle don't work well in my brain too. For me all elements stand alone, but if you put them in a circle you have to arrange them kinda randomly and with the four elements each element has one which it's not connected with and that changes with the arrangement of the cycle. Maybe there is some logic in it that I don't see, so if you understand it I'd be glad if you could enlighten me Β
Anyway, I wish you a wonderful day in harmony with the elements (how many it may be) and the universe Β

Thank you for your kind wishes!Β Β
Β  Β
Let me just state that I didn't want to get you "away" from the four elements in any way, your way of explaining them is totally consistent, and I can follow that quite naturally.Β
Also I still like your idea of eight (you're getting me more and more interested in that story of yours!). My idea was to split air into the moving air (= wind) and that "where there isn't anything because it has gone" (= the void). But I guess for your set-up your idea is really working a lot better, having somebody who can "make the air move" and somebody who "can compact or thin the air".

Moreover, I'm not an expert in these other elemental philosophies, just interested in the different approaches to things again.Β  Β
But since you asked, here's what I understood of the five elements (which isn't much, there's so much more to it!): They've got different cycles (or orders in which they are connected). Depending on the sequence they foster or nourish each other, or they weaken or even destroy each other.
The nourishing cycle goes something like this: Wood feeds the fire, fire produces ash that turns into earth, earth brings forth metals, metal attracts water (I'm never too sure of this one), water makes wood grow.
The destructive cycle, on the other hand, follows this logic: Water quenches fire, fire melts metal, metal cuts down wood, wood draws food from the earth (or can part earth/stone with its roots), earth absorbs or soils water.

What it comes down to is this (as always): One has to settle on that approach that fits the story best, I guess...Β

I'm really glad you like and understand my idea. I sometimes feel like my ideas are just logical and understandable for me. And I'm really happy it made you interested in the story, though I felt like a magic-system build on elements would be too normal, uninterestig and not innovative. Sadly I have to tell you the story just exists in my head right now. And I'm not sure if it'll ever be written completely, because the idea is for a whole book which will take some time to actually write it.Β And I'm still not 100% happy with the plot and everything (who knows if I'll ever will)

And you don't need to be an expert, there is Mr. Google who is an expert in everything. And after reading your comment I was so interested in learning more that I asked Mr. Google. And first of all he told me that my element is fire... not really my favorite... Anyway, I found out a lot about various things that should bring me luck and everything, but not really much about the "why these five elements" (or why the 12 zodiac animals). They are still a little random in my opinion, but on the other hand our zodiacs are pretty random too (unless you have enough imagination to actualy see them in the stars). But there is still one major question I have. Why dose fire melt metal and metal cut down wood? I mean, i understand it in the way, that a human can forge an axe and chop down a tree, but the human should not have an impact on the circle, because he can change a lot of things in it. For example he could use fire to let water evaporate (so fire destroys water, not water destroys fire) or he could water a plant to much so it dies (so water destroys wood instead of making it grow). I know this might mostly be not the case, but that's why I would try to make a circle without the influence of human. But without human fire and metal or metal and wood would never meet and the metal would not be sharp enough to cut wood.

I disagree, you don't have to settle on that approach that fits the story best. You can also build the story on it. My story started many years ago with the idea of the four elements and how it is connected with the world and then I thought about the plot and the characters and everything else Β
