I have a question to add to the pokeball part:
What if the pokemon is outside the pokeball when it gets crushed? Does it once again cease to exist or does it count as released?
(I know I should probably ask on the tumblr blog, but I hope it's not such a big question and it won't take you much time to answer)

If you break a pokeball while the pokemon is out, you no longer have ownership of it. That's all. You can recapture it with a new pokeball.
