I was designing web headers today (*cough*avoiding homework*cough*) and this one turned out rather nice. The colour pallet chosen for this header design was plucked right out of the image of flowers. As a rule you choose the main colours (usually 3 or 4) and arrange from light to dark. Then you play around with the colours until you have a pleasing combo for your design.
The light and dark colour greens compliment the photo and add some overall eye-pleasing contrast. The font colours are the same, only reversed. Note that the photo and the business name blocks are not the same size. Perfect symmetry is not your friend in this type of design.
