Description
As any fellow Star Wars fanatic knows, this year is the 30th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back. My favorite movie of all time.I always thought "Empire" showed Darth Vader at his most hardcore(Brutally mauling his own son, torturing Han Solo because he enjoys it, ordering his own fleet into an asteroid field and patiently waiting as it gets beat to hell, making a habit of choking his own overly polite officers, constantly changing the terms of a deal seemingly only because he likes screwing with Lando's mind, conspiring against his own Master, and generally not giving a %^).
And, the moment when Vader goes in with the ground troops raiding the rebel base during the battle of Hoth. I always liked that he doesn't care that there's a warzone all around him and he's going in on foot. With this painting, I wanted to pay an homage to that scene with one of those "could have happened off-screen!" moments. The idea here is that the Walker in the center has been brought down by rebel fire, but in true Vader fashion-he just doesn't care, and is strolling straight through the warzone toward the rebel base. I really worked on the atmospheric perspective here so that it looked similar to the film's colors.

My understanding is that Vader has anger issues. And thus is probably really angry about the turn of events. But I am assume I am being too literal on what you mean by "doesn't care".

It's moments like this that make me realize how well-designed Vader really is.
I grew up on Star Wars (we still have the video tapes), and sometimes the nostalgia goggles can blind you to these things.

Not to ignore Vader but I've got to give props on your work on the Snowtroopers here. Generally the movies make all the stormtroopers into cannon fodder for characters with plot armor. Your picture (to me anyway) throws that right out the window. It might just be the posturing, or the helmet design, but these guys look far more like the "Empire's Best" that storm troopers are supposed to be than they ever did in the movie. They look ready to kick ass and bag and tag some rebels.

I am in general bad with armor and outfits.
But you seem to handle star wars armor/outfits very well.
I never properly drew stormtrooper/clonetrooper armor and helmet.

I don't offer a higher-res anymore because people were making copies of it and selling them as their own work, sadly.
But glad you like it though!

Agree totally with your sentiments about Vader in ESB, he is actually frightening in his callousness and terrified me as a kid; he just seems an unstoppable force of nature. And I loved the scene where he wandered casually into the fire fight inside Echo base, like it was all trivial to him, this picture is the perfect extension to one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time.Β I hope the producers of the new films get this, Star Wars is at its best when it has an edge of darkness to it and the heroes are constantly being put on the back foot; hacking down useless battle droids that are no seriousΒ threat just gets dull fast.

Thanks! And yeah, I echo your sentiments completely. I have high hopes for the new movie, so long as they remember the tone of Star Wars that we all love. Empire and A New Hope are different movies, so finding the balance between the two can definitely be tricky.

My time has come
I was chosen by heaven
Say my name when you pray
To the sky see Carolus rise
With a the Lord my protector
Make them bow to my will
To the sky see Carolus rise
To the sky see Carolus rise
Proved in battle led my men to victory
No man alive or dead commands me I answer to the Lord
Hear my orders question me and die
What I say was said in heaven and so it shall be done
I know I was destined to rule alone
All for myself I have claimed the throne
Born to rule
My time is now
I was chosen by heaven
Say my name when you pray
To the sky see Carolus rise
With the Lord my protector
Make them bow to my will
To the sky see Carolus rise
To the sky see Carolus rise
All that's thine shall be mine there's no stopping me
All over Europe my rule shall be questioned by none
All I see give to me that is my decree
My will be done
They thought I was too young to rule the land
Just as they failed to understand
Born to rule
My time is now
I was chosen by heaven
Say my name when you pray
To the sky see Carolus rise
To the sky
With the Lord my protector
Make them bow to my will
To the sky see Carolus rise
To the sky see Carolus rise

You've captured Vader very well here. As you pointed out, the Dark Lord of the Sith goes where he wants to go, never mind there'sΒ battle underway. He doesn't care about causalities on either side as long as the job gets done.
