Description
how I created TF:A Lockdown:1. sketch - traditional
2. inks - Adobe Illustrator - Vectors
3. inks - final
4. inks with color touches + flat colors - Adobe Photoshop
5. shading added
6. final version with overlay effect added.
Illustrator + Photoshop + Cintiq
TF:A (c) Hasbro
ADD-ON cause people asked: a traditional sketch is only a rough base for me, if I know that it's going to be worked out digital, I don't sketch more than what you see here, rough lines and that's it

Hey Liz, how long do those vectors usually take you?

depends on the level of detail (and the pencils base..) Lockdown there took me around 15 mins.

One question though...what tool do you use for the cell shading?

Lizkay In reply to Storm-Blue [2008-11-01 09:19:41 +0000 UTC]
the same as for the flat colors, polygonal lasso tool and Edit -> Fill
I "draw" the shape of the shading as a selection and fill it with a darker color.

Cool, because that's what I do too. Just making sure I was doing it right. Thanks! XD

lol! I should say.. you gotta have the patience of a saint to work voluntarily in that program!
have you ever used flash? .. you might find it quicker \:]

Oh I did, the problem with flash is the filling vs. line stuff, the program doesn't really differ between a filled or a line-object. (or at least I could find out how to do so ) and I really need to be able to differ these too, to change the line-thickness... if needed
but yeah, what I worked out in flash so far was a lot more nerve-sparing XD

urr... I'm not sure I get ya... flash does differentiate between lines and objects... I inked [link] <-- this using the line tool(and my TFA portraits too atually) and then exported the lines to colour in photoshop.

hmm... I need the check what version of flash I have, might be a really old one, and it's been a while since I did anything in that program but still, there is a more painful way of doing clear inkings even without using Illustrator, for example, selection-stroking in Photoshop, holy... gives awesome results, but it takes you 5 hours plus to ink a picutre XD

bloody hell... photoshop's pen and point tool? ... I did one picture with that sucker back in 2004 [link] and it was such a headache I vowed never to use it again if I could possibly avoid it! lol .. I think so far I've done pretty well!

Oh that PS pen tool is PURE PAIN! I only tried that once..
but what I really meant is inking using the stroke feature in Photoshop, you make a selection and then go to Edit -> Stroke and it outlines your selection. You need to work in a real huge size to get that looking right and it needs like hundred or more steps to ink something that way, but it gives really really nice results, not as clean as vector lines and also not as blurry as pixel lines tend to be a nice mix...

ahh yeah I've worked like that too, and I've been playing with filled selection shapes a fair bit recently too. - for quick lines on photoshop though I just hold shift down while doing point to point... it's not always perfect but it's a lot quicker \:]

Hmmm... I'd really love to see a clean and clear tutorial for inks. Voted for it but it doesn't get enough love. :B

I already started doing a tutorial about Vector inkings ... heck, now that I get through the things in detail, it really shows how complicated that illustrator program really is

braucht man ein eigenes Programm dafΓΌr, ist am Anfang etwas kompliziert aber sobald man den Dreh raus hat ist man echt schnell
