All of these Disney/DreamWorks/etc. flappers are getting re-polishes for the new '20s. They will have a new blog on tumblr, as well as a new folder in this DA gallery, starting New Years of 2020. All of these old versions meanwhile are going to be dubbed "WIPS." Chrome out.

In the 1920s the African American community underwent a cultural movement now known as the Harlem Renaissance, so-named because the neighborhood of Harlem, New York became the center of that movement. The main driving force might have been the explosion of jazz music, but with it also came a wave of African American artists, writers and intellectuals. African Americans gained a new respect from much of America, though segregation was still a thing, and racism was still rampant. The Jazz Age also led to the racist expectation that Blacks could only be entertainers. But just a few generations after slavery ended, respect in any kind of industry was a massive mile stone.

I'm not providing any links this time, because I took two college courses dealing with the subject (one on African American History and one on Toni Morrison). I'm also not providing a "backstory" for this picture because Tiana's story already takes pace in the Roaring Twenties. So instead I'll just point out that at the end of the movie, her restaurant is blatantly violating the Volstead Act.
