It is being said that it stands for extreme bravery and a willingness to die in a fight or sacrifice one's life to protect family and folk. The vast majority of Odinists and Ásatrúars discourage anyone who is not of their faith from getting a valknut tattoed on their skin – it's a serious statement of the Odinic path someone has chosen in life, and it can often be a lonely and harsh one. Not every runenmeister (let alone every Ásatrúar) ends up making this level of commitment to Odin's path.

My understanding of the valknut, is that it's Odin's knot, of the knot of the slain.

not sure if any one has pointed this out yet, but a valnott/valknut (at least in some cultures) is used to show you have dedicated your life to odin. Wearers of brandishers of the valnott often die violently, (giving it the name the "death knot" as well).

Each symbol has multiple meanings. Connection with Odin isn't wrong interpretation of this symbol. After all, even on the rune stones is odin displayed with valknuts
