Ashley Hamrick wriggled on the sterile lab tile, her arms and legs pinned together by a stiff and slow-moving blue tar. Directly in front of her, a man about her age in a modified green lab coat fidgeted with a strange homebrew apparatus he had strapped to his back and arms-something like an exterminator’s backpack tank with Spider-Man’s web slingers. Wacky stuff.

Oh yeah, and he had his arm around her tied up and gagged best friend, Adrianne Olson, LlamTech programmer extraordinaire.

“C’mon, Nathan-you and I both know what you’re doing is crazy. If I had an hour, I could maybe explain *half* the reasons why dating would be a disaster for both of you.”

“Hnnnhhstly!” Adrianne seconded the remark through the scarf around her mouth.

“In that case,” the young man in the goggles reached toward his belt and produced a glass canister of the same gel he had used to incapacitate the girl before him. “It’s a shame you won’t be alive to offer your counterpoint. I’d give you less than an hour.”

“Wait, I’m sorry, what the fu-“

Ash’s assailant hurled the canister across the room, the glass shattering to spill a sample of slime no larger than a fist. The blonde looked at the mess, then back at the fellow who threw it. Then back at the mess again.

“You, uhhh..” She stifled a laugh. “You missed, bucko. Like, really bad.”

Dr. Nathan Hideki chuckled and straightened his back-she couldn’t see his expression through the lab coat, but she imagined it was the same smug expression she’d seen on countless thugs who were about to elaborately explain how they got one up on her.

“I wasn’t aiming for you, Ash. Take another look.”

Rolling her eyes, she did just that.

Oh fuck, that blob was the size of a football now.

“Starting to piece it together?” Hideki tapped his brow with a finger. “My new Supression Slime formula *expands*. Exponentially so.”

Ash looked down at the slime that she had already been plastered with. What was initially several well placed shots at her chest, legs, and ankles had now started to crawl further up and down her body-pooling onto the tile beneath her.

“Wow, that’s uhhh..” Ash grunted as she bucked her torso. “-nnf! That’s really impressive, Nate. Adrianne, you see this? Your boyfriend sure is a clever guy!”

“Hmmhhh nhhht mhhh bhhfrnnn…” the captive brunette mumbled.

“This stuff is like a plant-it feeds on carbon dioxide in the air and grows off of that! So the harder you breathe-“ he released a sample into his hand from his wrist extruder and exhaled onto it, causing it to nearly triple in size-“the faster it expands!”

Ash didn’t like the sound of that.

“So, for instance, say you’re a nosy snoop that’s trying to get in the way of someone’s romantic relationship! One that gets tied up an *awful* lot-“

“Hey, watch your mouth-“

“You’d probably struggle and writhe as much as you could to get out of such a situation for the umpteenth time, right? I’d imagine such efforts would produce a whole lot of heavy breathing-a whole lot of CO2-and thus, a whole lot of additional slime…”

“YEAH, I GATHERED THAT WHEN YOU FIRST MENTIONED IT.”

“Sorry, Ash.” He brought Adrianne closer to his side. “I try not to assume everyone is on the same level mentally as myself. That’s why Adrianne and I are such a perfect pair-we understand each other on that level. Two of LlamTech’s most brilliant minds, joined as one!”

“I’m gonna be real with you, Nate-I’m a woman who runs a Twitch channel and even *I* have not heard another human being talk in such a creepy, touch-starved kinda way.” The blonde wriggled to sit herself upright, to no avail. “Have you-nnnff!-considered asking girls to step on you on the internet? It might help you feel something, who knows.”

“Shut it! You’re literally wasting your breath, you know that?”

Adrianne grumbled as she struggled to stay on her heels. It was like clockwork watching Ash deal with an assailant. She would talk, and talk, and talk to try and buy herself time. Eventually she’d say something that would piss them off properly and-

“We’ve talked about this, dude! Adrianne probably isn’t the gal for you! You want someone who *compliments* you, not somebody who’s into all the same weird shit as you! That’s not what a relationship is!”

“Wrrdd shht?”

“STOP TALKING.”

“I know you’re looking for that manic pixie dream girl, but she’s honestly pretty imperfect! She raises succulent plants and kills every single one of them! You know she likes Ayn Rand, right? And don’t even get me started on the student debt you two would have to work together on as a couple. Man could I tell you the things I’ve seen her google-“

“WHHT ABBHT MHH GHHGGGL?”

“Alright, I’ve had enough of you-“

“I mean, do I have to spell it out for you? It’s pretty obvious Adrianne is a l-“

*THWIP*

Hideki’s outstretched arm delivered another glob of slime directly over Ash’s mouth-the impact nearly rolling her over.

And, like clockwork, she pissed him off properly and got herself shut up.

“Mhhhhhhgffhhhh! Mhhh tmmhh thh mhhh Ddmmhh mhh mh lhmmnnhhh!”

“As much as I love letting you talk *at* me Ash, I’m afraid we need to get going.” He placed his arm around Adrianne’s waist. “At best? I’d say you’ve got thirty minutes.”

Ash looked over at the glob that had come from the canister to see that it was now the size of a sofa.

Oh shit, this was bad.

“You put a lot of air into this room running your mouth, I’m afraid. If you’re lucky, somebody will come down here and find you!”

“Ffhhk yhhh…”

“If you’re a little less lucky, that slime will expand to fill this whole room.” Hideki placed his hand over the door control panel. “Would you prefer to be suffocated or crushed underneath that slime, Ash? I’m not sure which comes first. Either way, that’s gotta be a gruesome way to go, am I right?”

“YHH HHT FHKNN HHSSS!”

With that, Nathan Hideki lead Adrianne out of the room and shut the door behind them-leaving Ash to squirm atop her bed of writhing slime before she was buried in it. The unfortunate girl wriggled just a little bit more before laying down flat in frustration. She let out a sigh and waited.

With any luck, the LlamTech security bots would find her as quickly as they usually did. They hated competition.
