I worked all day on this drawing 🥲 one of my best IPad art pieces so far. That aside, it’s been a long time since I drew my wasteland boy; Toland. This drawing in a sense gives a little peek at his background long before he and his friend Scooter were found by the Desert Rebellion Euphoria airship where he joined their crew. I suppose you could say this is a spoiler as to what his (as well as Scooter’s) ultimate secret is. Alright, it’s story time now: The two have never spoken of where they truly came from, their past or their past and/current affiliates are. Many of the Euphoria’s crew disliked their strange secrecy, but over time they simply disregarded their concerns seeing that Toland and Scooter became important members of the crew and fit in quite well. The crew came to love the two.

To let in on his past, I suppose I’ll spoil it, as I’ll likely never release the story I’ve been trying to work on for years. So; Toland is a Cursed, hailing from the Widower ship itself, as well as Scooter, the two had been great friends even before then. Now, we will take it back to when he was alive, before he became a Cursed. Toland was a sort of Mercenary, a hired killing machine, an assassin some could even say. If you had a problem with someone; he was the go too. Now, he lived for hire for many years but eventually felt empty with this lifestyle. Toland was quite the entertainer, so he eventually founded the Red Desert Freak Circus; as it’s name implied it was a circus consisting of the wasteland folk that were misfits in every way, just like himself. Toland himself was born with a strange mutation unseen of in the wasteland that some came to call the “Anubis Mutation”. So, naturally his freak show followers trusted him as he could empathize with them. He became this freak circus’ Ring Master, and this group of misfits travelled the wasteland, city to city, state to state. Soon enough money was gained that the circus had its own Airship that Toland became the captain of; it was named “Anubis’ Wrath”.

It was shortly after this that Toland met his soon to be best friend; Scooter. Scooter himself is a bit of a whack job weirdo, so he actually joined the Circus. He was a mechanic prior and Toland gave him the honours of tending to the health of their ship; Scooter took great pride in this. Two years passed after this that their fate would take a twist. On a long journey across the Red Desert, the circus and their ship became entrapped in a vicious Fire Storm. As any ship did, the anchors were dropped to ride out the great storm. Through the whipping sand, the horrid thunder of a ship’s horn blared and a dark shadow overcame the Anubis’ Wrath; something worse than any storm had overcome them; the Widower. Tolands ship fought helplessly as it was boarded by the undead Cursed forces of the Widower. Toland watched his whole crew slaughtered without mercy. He fought back for what he could but had been shot in the abdomen and a blade stabbed through him just between his ribs. Scooter didn’t fight and was stabbed in the side. Still barely alive, The two were taken hostage onto the enemy ship, the Anubis’ Wrath blasted apart by cannon fire. They were taken to the Captain; Victor Morton. Both on their knees, spilling pools of blood onto the floor before Victor, clinging onto life. Scooter begged for their lives, claiming they’d be more use to him if they weren’t killed. Victor found amusement in the dying man’s pleas. Instead of wanting to torture them, Victor offered them eternal life; to be Cursed. The two didn’t object.

Both became Cursed shortly after, having their weary souls drawn from them and a new kind of existence put in replacement. With Scooter’s exceptional mechanical skills he was made to be the Widower’s mechanic, and Toland was made a commander of the Ship’s forces. With this power Toland became a killing machine deadlier than he’d ever been before; leading raids on all sorts of ships, killing more than he could keep track of. Due to his skills of also keeping under cover, he was eventually set off with Scooter into the wasteland to live among society. They soon were then taken in by the Euphoria; it’s crew and captain completely unaware of what they were, and the two made sure to keep it that way, hence their secretive nature. To their current day they remain apart of the Euphoria crew, but despite this, Toland will never forget his allegiance to the Widower. And if asked even by the Euphoria’s captain; Toland will easily return to his horrific murderous nature.
