No, it's made from wood. Sometimes a tree develops big a blister (called a "burl" [link] ) on its trunk, and often this can be removed and turned into a beautiful bowl by wood-turning. The grain and patterns in burl wood are usually complex and very attractive [link] .
My bowl is very heavy, and the spiky rough 'collar' is all natural. I thought it looked like a bird's nest, so I bought three eggs in different kinds of wood to make it look complete.

i know about burls, ther're lots of trees with such tumors here..
pretty much useful for climbing ))
but i've never seen woodwork made out of burls (well, statues maybe) or just haven't thought it was made out of 'abnormal' wood
there're bracket-funguses here that can grow into very large size, some people make decorative shelves out of them, i just thought it might be something similar ))
