I actually did this before. ....only I used ice instead of real water. XD

Ah...so if you add water DIRECTLY squids pop up. Not with a bucket.
So you cant do that in SSP?

You need either INVedit or a program like that

Water in the Nether is supposed to evaporate instantly.

Creepers/other mobs would also spawn if you put rock/dirt and put it in a dark area. Try that. the result could be instant...

This is probably because that water is the only water in the whole place, forcing the squid to spawn there
