“What?” One of the young wolf’s woman’s companions replied, not hearing her completely.

“I can’t leave her….” The young wolf replies, clarifying her words. She holds on to the little girl who had just lost both of her parents to monsters, unable to let her go. “I’m going to stay behind with her.”

“Wait, but Sasha, you always wanted to be an adventurer. Why give it up now? We can take her back to the nearby village and…” The young puma man that had known Sasha all her life was cut off gently by Sasha.

“It just, feels right. You know I haven’t been happy lately. Maybe it’s my motherly instincts kicking in. You guys have always joked about them coming out at some point.” The little girl looks up at the wolf woman, giving a sad look. She could see that Sasha was about to give up a lot for her, but her young voice wouldn’t come out. As much as the child wanted to tell the wolf that she would be fine, she also knew that there was nothing waiting for her back at the village with her parents now dead.

The leader of the adventurers places a hand on the young puma man’s shoulder as he walks closer. The older male human then talks softly, and slowly, making sure he was understood. “Then at least finish this job with us. It will bring you some coin and the guild can help find you a good job that will also let you take care of the girl. Otherwise, what? You are going to be a guard for that little village? That would be almost insulting to you and your abilities. I can protect her outside when we reach the ruins and you four clear it out. After, what loot you find plus the pay from the guild would be enough to get you two started on a new life back home. And…” The leader looks over to the young puma man, his eyes locked on Sasha and the little girl, “That would leave open other possibilities.”

Sasha knew that this would be the best option for her and the young girl. Sasha was not prone to quick decisions, so this did give her time to think stuff over with the distance left to travel to the ruins. “Okay, we will do that. Is that fine with you, little one?” The little girl nods, hugging Sasha around the neck, laying her head on her fur for a few moments.

As they embraced, the adventurers’ leader ordered the others to give the parents a burial by fire, ensuring that no other creature could desecrate their bodies. They then took the wagon that the couple was using, the horses having survived, and took it as their own. The adventurers’ leader said that, once the job was over, they would leave the wagon and the horses in Sasha’s and the little girl’s care as they rightfully belonged to the little girl. They then continue on down the road, the little girl riding in the wagon with Sasha driving, the others walking and protecting them along the way to the ruins.
