“What are you? You look like a mix of a deer and a wolf.” John says as he and Wendy start to back up.

“That happened awfully fast…. Are you … Still you?” Wendy’s voice showed her mixed feelings, concern and fear coming into David’s furry ears.

“I am still me… It’s just, I can’t keep my human form for long now, for some reason….” David’s own shocked face turned to one of concern and defeat, as he took a seat back in the booth of the diner. The other patrons of the place staired on; a few with their hands closing on their firearms if the situation turned bad.

But as David sat down and started talking, everyone slowly calmed down. “Sorry… I am a fae. The reason would never invite you all to my house is, well… I don’t have one. I live in the forest, watching over it. I am the new protecter of this area, but for some reason the magic is leaving here.”

“Are you even our age? I mean, you been in our class for years.” Wendy slowly walks closer to David, her hand wanting to reach out to his.

“I am. And I am young for what we call a Guardian. But when I saw the school, and everyone laughing and playing, I wanted that… Being a magical being can be lonely sometimes….” Daivd looks up, Wendy’s face now softening. John has even stepped closer.

“Why didn’t you tell us? And why would you change back now…” John asks. Once again, the others in the diner listened in as it was a small town.

“For me changing, I think my magic just decided to cut out… It happens sometimes when a person uses too much magic or if something is disrupting the magic. For not telling y’all…” David’s eyes turned sad, almost watery. “I didn’t want to scare you two…. I didn't want to…”

Wendy drops to her knees and wraps her arms around David before he could finish. “Why would we leave you. You are our friend!”

“She’s right,” John places a hand on David’s shoulder. “We are here for you, man.”

David smiles, leaning into Wendy’s embrace. He nods his head, before talking more about himself.
