nice, you almost sound like you know what you're talking about. But no, I would keep the carpet because it acts as a frame to the rest of the picture, the subject is not the cats face, but the whiskers and snout. speaking of "colors" and accentuating", the picture is in black and white, you can't really accentuate from shadow to light. just contrast. but I'll keep your feedback in mind.
