Thank you and for getting me the DD! Also thank you all for the comments and favorites. I really appreciate it.

This is the knife that I donated to the 2012 Arkansas Knife Show which will be held on Feb 18th and 19th.

It is also the knife that is featured along with a picture of me, in the Knifemaker's Showcase section of the Blade magazine in the March 2012 issue which hit the newsstands in Jan, 2012. You can view the write up about the knife and me here:

In all honesty it was luck that it came out like this. If I did it with the same amount of metal and tried to get the same water-ish look again, it would probably look completely different. A lot of it had to do with the acid and the temperature/age of it. Which was super old. It took nearly 3 days of non-stop etch to get this and that was only because I kept forgetting about it. When I finally pulled it from it's acid bath and I cleaned it up, this was what I got.

I have found blue stabilized coral that looks like this again, but I will probably do a higher layer count that way my results are a little more reliable and more complex. I'm not sure if it will really take away from the look or not, but we will see.

Gorgeous knife, but technically it's "Damascene" steel, (or Damascened.) not Damascus steel. Since we no long have the materials or technique to make REAL Damascus steel.

That aside, this is really interesting, and impressive work.

I just call it what my association calls it and what magazines and publications call it, since people understand that better. But since the techniques and materials and all that are lost and we don't know how to recreate it, whose to say we haven't already and just don't know it? Not that it matters to me really, it's all just a name.

Thank you!

Jianre-M In reply to Logan-Pearce [2011-08-29 02:39:16 +0000 UTC]

ah, understandable. My brothers and I are kinda geeky about swords and metals.

though interestingly enough, they DO know what makes Damascus steel so powerful, and despite KNOWING we can't recreate it yet. Recently Scientists have found, and learned how to make something called "Carbon Nano-Tubes" which individually are one of the strongest structures for their size, when investigating under elecron microscope Damascus steel in comparison, it had ribbons of Carbon Nano-tubes in it. Somehow formed from the minerals and the forging process. The modern dillema being... the melting point of steel and iron is much higher than the break-down point of Carbon Nano-tubes. So no, we don't know how to make it.

But it's still facinating.

and I wasn't trying to be critical, just wasn't sure if you knew.

You're welcome! and keep up the good work.

Lol, yeah I know. I've a library on steels, blacksmithing, knifemaking, etc. I have a lot of stuff on damascus and how it's a lost art and we can't make damascus. The other members of the ABS all love that stuff and keep trying to figure out how to recreate it. They are always real focused on making the best blades and have a few lectures and writings on it. A lot of them won't even call it dama-anything, they just call it laminated steel. Me personally, I just like how it looks. lol. No problem, I wasn't offended, I have this conversation a lot. A whole lot of people correct me when I say damascus, so it's nothing new. xD

I'll try.

Hehehe, awesome! XD

I don't have the tools or know-how to forge or anything myself, but it's awesome to see people work on it. ^_^

Lol.

I don't have the know-how to forge either. I just go in with a hammer and start swinging.

Lol, I think it's funny as well. I mention it from time to time to people. My last name is spelled funny compared to other Pearce's which spell their name Pierce. I like the way my name is spelled better, but! just think if it was Pierce it'd even be spelled for stabbing people. o.O
