Description
GWR 2800 Class 2-8-0 no. 2857 (built at Swindon in 1918) approaches the public foot crossing along Northwood Lane, on the edge of Bewdley, with a Bridgnorth-bound service. And yes, I was on the safe side of the fence! Very contrasty conditions like those this afternoon are really too much for my little compact, but within those limits I quite liked the way this shot came out.The 2800 class were the first 2-8-0s in Britain, the first of them being constructed in 1903. No. 2857 herself emerged earlier this year from years of overhaul, looking quite stunning. Built as a heavy freight loco, she barely breaks into a sweat with even the biggest loads on the SVR. Note that, against more common British practice, GWR locos are right-hand drive.

What brilliant composition and title! As a lover of virtually all "crew" shots this one is an instant favorite for sure.

Thank you very much! I'm very fond of crew shots, too; I've been trying to get some more recently.

I really like this one such a lot. It would be just perfect for the cover of a book.
