how does her hair stay that volumous? who knows. drawn over a boredom sketch done in philosophy class. this is ariel (the little mermaid) obviously, for those who don't know :bscanned sketch, inked and colored in photoshop 5.

I love the coloring job on this, though - esp. the hair. Plus the pose is nice, y her expression is just so Ariel. You really do do the best Ariel art around, you know that?

ok - here's my full explanation.
i've loved her ever since i was a little kid ^^ when i moved to the US at the age of 4 it was the first video tape we got, as a gift from this family we stayed with, so watching that film brings back a lot of beautiful childhood memories from me... feelings, colors, smells i couldn't remember otherwise...
it's not just that though; it's also the type of story that it is... recent animation films like the incredibles or shrek, etc, are really funny and i do enjoy them but they depend largely on the cynical humor in all the stories. shrek makes fun of all the traditional fairy tales and i think all the recent successful animation films have a very sarcastic approach to their jokes. i appreciate them and finding nemo is one of my favorite films, but i think the little mermaid represents a type of mainstream animation film that came before the cynical humor, and has a lot of heart and genuity which makes it - at the risk of sounding cheap - quite magical. it was before the disney princess genre got totally cheap and over-stylized, and before witty jokes were the foundation of a good animation film. and i think the level of stylization makes the film excellent - the flowing forms, the colors, etc. it wasn't too unrealistic but it wasn't too realistic either (like later don bluth films like anastasia, which look like they were traced over filmed footage). i love the character designs and ariel's total childishness and naivitΓ©; it's really just a great film. that combined with my childhood attatchment to it is probably the reason i like ariel so much

That's so beautiful. =] The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie-- it'll always have a place in my heart.
I love Ariel's personality. She's so curious and strong-willed. Beautiful job drawing her. The lineart is well put together. The style looks really Disney, yet realistic with a strong splash of your own unique style. Fantastic color job. You got so much detail into the image with it, and it adds so much depth and life to her. I love her rosy cheeks and bright hair. The color style looks similar to cell shading, but it seems to be a little more complex than that.

her face looks EXACTLY like Ann Hathaway's (the girl from Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted). Really, its like insane, lol. But, I do love the picture! I've always wondered how she can get her bangs to stay all funky and sideways like that. I mean really, if you're swimming underwater, usually your hair is flowing behind you, not accross your face... Anyways though, I love the pic X3
