Description
figured i'd post an updated version of the time warp drawing i did back in 2009... seeing as i'm in a new phase of life now!original meme template here - Do The Time Warp
and here's my short life story again for anyone who's curious:
my family moved around a lot because my dad had a job with the dutch embassy. born in dordrecht (holland), moved to virginia when i was 4, moved to jakarta (indonesia) when i was 8, moved to paris when i was 11, moved to brussels when i was 15, went to gent (belgium) for college for 1 year, then moved to hilversum (holland) to study at the utrecht school of the arts, moved to utrecht in 2009, and have lived there ever since! i've been a freelance artist ever since graduating that same year. and no, i don't speak a lot of languages unfortunately - i suck at languages and i went to international school where classes were taught in english, so i'm bilingual english/dutch!

It's funny how some details remind me myself (nondescript clothing as a teen, fat shoes with neon laces, eastpack bag...)

You can't possibly be "grown up" at the young age of 30. (Said the 43 year old.)
Brilliant set of pictures - a great way to tell a short version of your life story.

yeah, that was pretty brutal. hated the first day of school at a new school! however.. i did always get the chance to start fresh. i had a bad year in 5th grade and was so happy to start over with new people in 6th grade.

ye know the feeling... something changed from junior to senior school...guess innocence took a hike.... rather lonely time amoungst two faced bitches heh was like running round a circle, trying to find a crack to get through....to be part of the inner circle...
so when 16yr old me had the choice of 6th form with most of those girls or at a different school...u can imagine which i chose....best damn decision of my life...made my closest friends at the new high school

yep. sometimes a fresh start is what kids need. your identity is changing so fast and you're not always in tune with the kids around you. my new school in paris was waayyyy more laid back and small than the school in jakarta which helped too.

ye...and then you also think about those rare kids that live on a boat and are home schooled but get to see the world way more than the rest of us... its interesting to consider the effects of various schools and schooling methods on people and how it enriches their life or does not help their character to bloom.

yeah.. the more i think about it lately the more i think that lots of things that school brought to my life was unnecessary torture. for a lot of kids.. having to spend so much time with such a specific group of people can be traumatizing, especially if you're being bullied or feel like you don't fit in. and a lot of kids are highly intelligent but don't "fit" into the school system very well because they're different. i feel like the traditional school system stunts their growth. my baby bro (he's 6) is already experiencing this - he's really smart and finishes assignments faster than everyone else, but teachers are always putting him down because he distracts the other kids. apparently they want him to just sit still and saying nothing for long periods of time. he's 6!!!

poor guy! they should be giving him extra work to complete or have a tutor....but this all means more staff or more resources n more money and many schools cant afford it, which is such a shame.
it is interesting to ponder what type of society we would be if schools were more of the idea system and i wonder what sort of people it would then churn out... perhaps people who use their mind, imagination and creativity more and also perhaps their heart more.
or would there be problems because some people havent learnt to be independent enough or even ruthless enough to make certain critical decisions to help patients or society in general....learning to not to give in to peer pressure and be influenced by what others want...
interesting to consider

it is interesting, i also think it's a really important benefit of school that kids are away from their parents and get to know other kids, adults, etc. parents often need the break and kids shouldn't be living in a bubble dominated by their family only. i think as with most things it's a grey area.. for some, the school system holds them back, for others it lets them flourish.

certainly...both from a young and older age...kids need to learn to interact with others..and also perhaps pick up some teachings and good morals from other kids that they have learnt from their parents...being exposed to different ways of thinking and looking at things...even though sometimes that works in a negative way too.
