Somehow, this picture gives off the same feeling as the book. In other words, it seriously creeps me out, yet I just can't stop looking at it (or in book's case reading). Wonderful, wonderful work of art.

Gorgeous! Reading the novel right now, love Humbert as a character, he's so well-written.....you can almost believe he's an actual person. Love this picture, it reminds me of the film version with Jeremy Irons almost.

Even though she was described as having auburn hair in the book, I still pictured her as a blonde, it fit her personality more. Very Nice piece.

Really nice work. It pretty much sums up what went on between the two... and look at Lo', she doesn't care at all. She doesn't have love for him. :C
Really, really pretty picture though!!

I loved the book. The colours in this piece are soft and beautiful. Nice outfit on Humbert, too. And pose.

ah! ah!! favorite book alert! I saw the thumbnail and I THOUGHT i smelled humbert humbert <3
my favorite man, he is...
she doesn't deserve him, the demon child >.o
*oddly protective*
Funny, Tom said somebody was doing something from Lolita- i did an experimental portfolio illustrating the scene where he licks her eye... turned out odd.
You did her dress and hair well, though maybe something around her hairline is.. eh?
Hum's my favorite part though- the pattern on his vest feels authentic and I like the texture of his hair <3

BAWWW, omg, they just....they want me to do the old one. I got cornered by Ralph, Joe, Zina, Matt, AND Mark, and they were all just "Do the old one wahh, you need to finish." until I freaked out and blah. It was bad. So yeah, I'm doing the old TOPIC again, but I'm all "REDOING EVERYTHING!" Zina is pissed, but she can be pissed. She's just a teacher.
Ahhh I really appreciate it. I've actually started using reference a lot more, and I think it's totally helping. Thanks to Viva having a billion costumes for any character I could imagine. HARHAR.

I have to say, I haven't read Lolita yet, though it's in my To-Read list, but we've been taught parts of it in Literature class a while back, and this is exactly how I imagined it. Just... gorgeous and highly disturbing. Yes please.

THanks so much! My teachers were skeptical because I showed the characters, and they thought it was too much, but....it's like, what is this book about, other than two people and their plays for power over each other? (aside from the pedo) When I get out of school, I want to do more, just because I lvoe this book so hard. And thank you again! Much appreciated.

Well, you know, if we were talking about a different book, I might have agreed with them; but considering we're talking Lolita, the book doesn't really leave any room for imagination as far as the characters look, maybe besides Humbert being a little older.

lokelani In reply to EngleArtist [2009-01-23 21:00:46 +0000 UTC]
I think there are different ways to look at this book. They acted as if the only people reading Lolita were old people in their late thirties and 40s and up, when, really, a lot of young kids read it. I had quite a few friends read it in high school, and even more in college. The idea that only one audience can relate or want to read this book is utterly ridiculous to me. Just because it's a classic doesn't mean it can't reach other age groups.
And yeah, I wanted to make Humbert real attractive and ambiguously aged, but I think he's a bit TOO young. I figured he was in his late thrities according to the timeline, and while a lot of my friends in their late thrities look young and hot and hip, he might not. However!!! My friend who read this with me were talking, and saying how Humbert was INSANE over the fact Lolita fell in love with an older gross unattractive dude, and he was blown away because he himself is an attractive, hot, lady killer. So, I didn't want it to be dirty old man, juxtapose beautiful young filly. But, that's just me. XD I'll probably change it when I finish, I think it went over a lot of peoples heads.

EngleArtist In reply to lokelani [2009-01-23 21:08:18 +0000 UTC]
Completely agreed. This book doesn't just talk about an older man loving an underaged, undeveloped[? sort of] little girl, it's about preversion in general, and people of every age can relate to that.
When you explain it like that it all makes sense XD

I love how thick and golden her hair looks, and how delicate her knuckles are. The whole piece has such a golden glow to it - I can't help but be reminded of medieval devotional work, which is sort of appropriate in a really perverse way.
Sorry I'm practically spamming your gallery. >_> yeah, I know, why I apologize... I think I just feel stalkerish or something. There just seems to be so much to comment on though!

No I don't mind at all! I really appreciate them, haha, I'm just so bad at taking real compliments. I think art school has trained me to only take critique comfortably, but I get enough of that from teachers. Just when I get to DA I'm like "ARGH! No! Compliments are scarY!" But they do mean a lot to me, I just have bad self esteem.

Oh, creepy and elegant at the same time of course. I thought it was Lolita related...but it's so subtle. Love the way the clothing folds came out, btw. Hope the teachers like it! :0

Yep, I was thinking that, but then I went and did AH FUCK IT, it don't matter anyway. I just wanted her to glow. If I ever finish it though, I'll work out more of the shading, though it may remain unfinished till the end of time.

Fantastic book, and wonderful interpretation, though maybe you should add more grey to Humbert's hair so he looks older.

Haaaaaaaaahahaha, yeah, I was thinking of that. I was like "Damn, he looks young", but as I'm reading it I can't help but picture him being extremely attractive in a douche-bag kinda of way. The attractive man in his late thirties who barely looks over 25, and gets all the womens.
But I dunno, if I come back to it, I shall consider that!

AHHHGGG LOLITA AND HUMBERT gahhhhhh <3 That book is so creepy, I never read all of it, but I read enough parts to know I should finish it. x'DDD
Ahhhggg Thissssss is a gorgeous scene. <33333 Your style is so excellent for something like this, it's intimate, but not sugary at all. She looks so cold and pretty, like the little minx she was in the book.
Awesome stuff. I love how perfect and even the window is.

I read parts of it when I was in high school but the language is SO crazy/flowery that I didn't get through much of it. I just started reading it again and it's sick sick SICK. I can't help but be drawn to Humbert and his absolute pathetic obsession with Dolores. Argh, it's so twisted.
Even if I'm not doing it for school, I might do some more illustrations of it when I'm of fucking SCHOOL! But thank you thank you!
