Description Poser, Lightwave, and Octane render.  Some post effect in Photoshop, just for the lens flare.  Thank you for looking, and I'm really loving the Octane renderer.  This scene, with volume smoke, and depth of field, only took about 8 min to render at 1400x1400.  I reduced the size for upload.

Looking awesome! I'm still struggling with opencl based engines (mostly lux). Not much fun at all. Well, actually I've given up and decided Lightwave and Monte Carlo is still the way to go. It's amazingly fast and flexible.

Have you tried octane, Jim?  I find it incredible, but only works with Nvidia Cuda cards.  I agree the OpenCL engines and cards still aren't perfect, and not reliable.  Great to hear from you again!

It looks like OCL is really coming along on AMD cards. Lots of work going on with LuxRender, bringing some very nice rendering algorithms to GPU. Have not used Octane at all, probably won't now that we have Iray in DS.

I'm not sure Iray is as fast or good as Octane.  I did use Iray last year, as I mentinoed, in the 3dsmax demo.  It seemed cool, but not quite as fast as octane is.  Probably has a lot to do with my graphics card though. I have Nvidia now.

I don't really know about quality comparisons, but given that Iray is Nvidia's baby I would be surprised if Octane was a better bet. I've read a few mentions that GPU speeds are similar, but I haven't seen any benchmark comparisons.

I know, but I think Octane has some advantages, being it has been under development so long, and advancing faster.  iRay definitely has the advantage for potential though, considering it's Nvidia behind it.  Nvidia is still developing MentalRay too though, so expect to see the two engines merge into one super engine in the future.  Octane is still the first, and deepest, GPU renderer from what I understand though.  It was the first to introduce displacement in GPU only rendering, I think, on a production level.

Don't like to contradict ya, but I think Iray has been around longer than Octane. Don't remember the the year of inception but I compared it to Octane a while back.

Oh you may be right, and probably are!  I just assumed Octane was around the block longer, because it seemed to be more developed than Iray in terms of materials and such.  Also the fact it can use different render "kernels", which make it a little more versatile.

Wonderful composition! I, too, am curious about the volumetric fog. Is that using the box method with a fog material inside?

Also, I'm not sure if the fireflies are postwork, or caused by the emitter in the scene, but if you want to get rid of those, the hotpixel removal tool can take care of that.

Yes, it's a box prop with volume smoke shader applied to it, then just softened slightly in photoshop using the zdepth pass from octane.  The sparkles I applied in post on purpose.

I like the scene very much.
Must say the volumetric smoke is awesome, are they from Lightwave ?

lolatmyself23 In reply to Laticis [2014-04-13 18:17:22 +0000 UTC]

The smoke was done by using Octane Volumetric smoke shader on a box prop.  Then just softened slightly in photoshop.

I haven't messed with volumetrics in Octane yet.
