Description
Well guys, my final exams are finally up! It was tough to resist drawing this cute Fluttershy instead of studying. Also, this happens to be my first pony drawing on my new paper! I'm really enjoying it's texture! Much better,
solid, clean, colour lay-on. You can compare it to my other drawing on sketch paper here!
I must also thank RivaMoN for being an inspiration for this drawing. There's just so much to learn
from her unique drawing style! Her drawing of this Fluttershy in particular really laid the foundation
for what I have drawn here. Huge shout out to her for being such an amazing artist! (;
Also, I plan on drawing the rest of the mane 6 with my prismacolor pencils in the similar style. I want to hear
which pony you guys want me to draw next! Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Twilight Sparkle or Applejack?
Use the poll here!
Let me know what you think of it

Aww so cute man! ^-^ If you could bring the light and shading to the same level as it is in your lead pencil drawings, that would be so awesome!

Honestly, colour pencils are a huge step up from my sketches.
There's just so many techniques I have to apply in different
manners! But I do hope someday, I can bring my coloured
works on par with my sketches. Thanks a bunch, PonyMusic!

Awwww! ^^ LOVE the way you did her hair. With pencils it can often turn out bad, but you made it look soft and divided into separate strands (illusion).
Really really good job.

Daww, thanks Dear (:
Colour pencils are particularly harder to master. Most of the techniques I use with pencil sketching doesn't work. The hair was the biggest challenge and I'm glad it turned out the way it did!
Thank you so much!

I agree. They are a bitch to work with. (Have tried with my daughter's pencils - didnt turn out well xD)
In general all traditional tools are tough, as there are no edit button and they all behave differently. Charcoal, pencils, color pencils, acrylic, pastel etc. etc. -

I can just imagine you stealing her pencils haha! I guess the result also comes from the quality of the paper and pencils.
Yeah no doubt! I had to do a whole bunch of practice sketches before I even started drawing the real thing!
I concur. Traditional works can be a real toughie! I'm sure traditional artists have thought of ctrl-z sometime while drawing xD

Oh yes, I always forget about the paper. If its good paper the colours stick better right?
hahaha xD Yup! ctrl-z is the best thing in the world!

In a way it does stick better. The texture is more flat which allows the pigment to enter the pores in the paper better than something like sketch paper.
Very true (:

TheGrowingPeachTree In reply to LolliponyArt [2015-06-25 04:09:28 +0000 UTC]
Well the eye's are great but ya, your shading with colored pencils could be better. Probably have to use darker colors though not sure if lighter colors should be used first or not. Traditional coloring is very different from digital, and when i "traditional" i only use pencil. But I'm pretty sure there's plenty tutorials on shading with colored pencils. 😎

I'm unsure on how to create good contrasts without taking away from the rich colours. It's one of those things I'll have to find out for myself. I'm afraid to darken things because dark colours are exceedingly powerful when placed on light colours such as Fluttershy. Besides, I feel lighter colours work better towards that softness from her.
Also, why do you disagree with using light colours? I'm curious as to your perspective of them.

TheGrowingPeachTree In reply to LolliponyArt [2015-06-25 05:40:37 +0000 UTC]
Nah, im not against light colors im just saying to get a shading affect off of the base color for example fluttershy's i think you would have to use darker colors from the base like darker yellow (if that's a thing) and darker pink for the spaces in her hair. But i honestly don't know how shading with colored pencils is really even achieved. Again if I'm not drawing with only pencil then I'm digitally drawing which when it comes to shading you can add many dark or light colors to get the affect you want but traditional drawing with colored is to me seams harder cause it's hard to put shades of colors over each other. For example flutters hair with both dark pink and light pink you would have to figure out which to put on fist, the light or dark. Cause if you put dark first and don't leave room for putting the lighter pink it's not going to look right maybe. Same with the other way around. And there's a bunch of different ways that i have no idea about. But as someone as myself with very little knowledge about this stuff it's best to find a tutorial to show it well or experiment alot.
And hopfully you understood what i was trying to say in this mess of a comment.

I've figured out to work colours from light to dark. Dark goes on last because it overpowers the light colours. Once it's all down, layer again with a lighter hue. It gets it smoothened quite well like that actually.
I've tried putting on a dark base coat in one of my experiments and when you try and apply the hair strands and highlights, it doesn't work. Certainly does the trick for pencil shading, but definitely not colouring. I actually did a whole bunch of experimenting before I started drawing it. I played with the eyes and mane the most.
As for fluttershy coat, I too agree it needs to be darkened but I don't want it ending up looking brown so I played it safe. I'll need to play around with that as well. Thanks a bunch for the insight! I'll apply it to my next work. (:
