Description FULL VIEW PLEASE. This file is huge. D:

People keep asking me how I put on my wigs so well so I figured this tutorial is long overdue. This is not the ONLY way to put on a wig, but it works for me. Hopefully, someone out there will find this useful. XD

(I apologize for the ghetto-ness and any typos. I've never made a tutorial before, I was too lazy to put on makeup and all I had was my bathroom mirror, lol.)

---------------

***GENERAL FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS***

1. WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE AFTER I TAKE THE WIG OFF?
Admittedly, your hair will look like a complete mess after the wig cap and the bobby pins come out. I always solve this problem by taking a shower --after a day of cosplaying and wearing crazy costumes/makeup/etc., this is always a good idea.

2. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I HAVE SUPER LONG HAIR?
I don't have experience with Rapunzel-length hair, but according to some friends, you're supposed to wet your hair, do french braids (usually more than one) and pin THOSE up using the bobby pins. I'm not sure how well this works.

3. WHEN SHOULD I PUT ON MAKE-UP?
If you're the type to wear makeup for cosplays (ALSO a good idea ), I usually pin my hair up FIRST and tuck any stray hairs under the wig cap before I do my makeup. Your hair shouldn't budge by this point and you can take as long as you want to put on your makeup. It's important to put on your makeup BEFORE you put on the wig because the wig's bangs/stray hairs will get in the way.

4. HOW SHOULD THE WIG FEEL?
If you've done everything right, your wig should feel fairly snug (not tight!) but very comfortable. I can wear my wigs for well over 10-12 hours without feeling the urge to itch anything. Make sure you fix any bobby pins that may be pushing into your head or something BEFORE you put the wig on so you don't end up hurting yourself somehow. @_@;

Feel free to ask any more questions, I'll try to answer them the best I can.

But doesn't make wet hair have a ''smelly'' hair after hours with the wig on? Because of the sweat and stuff.

This is so perfect for me! My hair is a little longer than yours though, and a bit thicker by the looks of things. Do you think it will still work?

Thank you so much for posting this, it helped me a lot with getting my wigs to look a little more natural! I have kinda think hair, and when I do the pigtail or french braid method I end up with it not holding or ending up with a bump. This method feels more natural (and for me, it's quicker) and looks better. Thanks again

How much are wigs?

Well, of course an estimate.

How much are wig caps?

Again, an estimate.

I'm low on money.

Cheap wigs are about $15~20, but really high priced wigs are like $100<. XD (I got this information by searching up lots of wigs on Ebay and Amazon.) High priced wigs are better (obviously), but people like you and me should stick to low-priced wigs. (My allowance is literally $13... Bad luck AND not much lol)

Thank you so much!!! Every other tutorial said to braid my hair, but it's not long enough to braid..I thought I was doomed to look bad in wigs forever. I just tried this (very casually) and it looks so much better~ I am forever grateful.

Thank you for the tutorial, but I have heard that using wet hair with the wig will ruin it... has this ever happened to you?

I have a little question! My friend has super (and I mean suuuuuuuper) thick hair (about your length, maybe a bit longer), and I've been trying to help her find ways to get rid of the super awkward hair bulge under the wig cap...could she just do this method or would she have to do something different?

Question: If your hair is wet and under the wig, won't it get really really itchy? Q_Q

Would you recommend always getting wigs in more or less the same shade as your real hair?
I mean... That part by your ears, just in front of your ears....That doesn't go into the hair cap. Might that show under the wig?

I might have more questions, but I'll post them when I remember them.

Lomelindi88 In reply to king-herod [2012-07-07 02:16:47 +0000 UTC]

Depends on the wig really. Most long, especially female wigs will cover that part of the face.

There are ways to cover your side burns, they're just annoying. I would usually trim some wig hair and press it down over your side burns if you really need to hide them. Usually they're not too visible, even in pics, unless you're wearing a white, swept back wig or something. (VERY delayed response sorry!)

Oh, that's fine.
Thank you for the advice! ^^ Fortunately, I'm blonde, so it might not be a problem when I cosplay someday.

Thank you so much.
I have longer hair, and I like it long, but whenever I put a wig on it looks puffy and strange. Now that I know to wet my hair before putting on my wig cap, maybe that will flatten it down!
Thank you again, this was really helpful ^-^

Thank you for this. I've just started work on my first cosplay, and I've been wondering how to get the wig on without my thick hair making it sit wrong.
Granted, I've only had it on twice now but still. xD
Thick, wavy, brown hair is hard to hide under a reasonably slick light pink wig. x_x

Anyway, I'll get some bobby pins and try this technique out!

Ash-chan94 [2011-04-11 01:37:30 +0000 UTC]

Hi I have a question but it is not on how to put on a wig, its for how to keep a really long wig on your head? I have a Stocking wig from panty and stocking with gaterbelt and the hair reaches almost down to my knees. The style is just straight with bangs that cover the forehead. When I wear the wig I have to push it back so the bangs are covering my head and eyebrows, but when I do this that means the actual begining of the wig net is almost in the middle of my head. How can I keep it from slipping but keep it natural at the same time? Thank you! Your method for putting on wigs is very helpful too!

Lomelindi88 In reply to Ash-chan94 [2011-06-18 03:51:39 +0000 UTC]

I would try to bobby pin UNDER the bangs so that the pins capture either your real hair and/or your wig cap. It'll be tricky, but I can see what you mean. Also, maybe pull the wig forward and then trim the bangs so the hairline won't end up so far back?

Ash-chan94 In reply to Lomelindi88 [2011-06-18 03:55:54 +0000 UTC]

I am going to try that method, the wig is currently in a nice sealed bag because it got tangled from a shoot I had then got styled again, but on the day of the con I will try your method thank you for the help!
