"Mr. Humphries, are you free?" "After exposure to this, I'm free for anything!"
(I'll always equate the name Humphries with "Are You Being Served?")

It's a good story, although the climax loses something for me in the reveal and the resolution. However the maze and the labored allegorical tale that is quite creepy really makes it a fond and useful one for the RPG gamer.

The reolution seems unusally hurried for the craftsmanship of James, but the lead-up to the climax is good, I think. And I really like the doom-laden allegory

I gained a new appreciation for this story after getting an idea of what the grown (and overgrown) yew bushes would do in terms of scenery once they formed archways and created a 3-D organic maze. I have also cleaned out overgrown gardens and semi-wooded lots, so I can imagine how wild and out of place the neglected maze must have appeared to Mr. Humphreys. The temple and its peculiar globe were the icing on the cake then. The allegory had the best and most suggestive imagery, one sometimes wishes it had its own tale instead of being a tale-within-a-tale. James cleverly left it to the reader to decide whether or not a man "like Theseus in the Attick tale" had once dared an earlier and deadlier version of the yew maze to take something from it, or if his ancestor had known of that maze, and had done his own version.

It has a brooding creepiness that I like. Mr Humphries is such an innocent, but he survives the supernatural encounter and really becomes the master of his new home.

This is great! Can I request artwork? Personally, I'd hope to see the creatures of Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Thanks! I might do the sea monsters from that book eventually. It's a childhood favourite of mine.

Mr. Humphries needs a better lawyer for that inheritance!

Well, Mr Humphries probably should've left things alone, evil celestial globes and all.

Very awesome. I love the perspective here.
That reminds me though, have you seen the Stars preview of Ash vs the Evil Dead?

It's one of James's longest, but it build up the atmosphere nicely and keeps you wondering what the hell is going on.

Thanks! After adding all the colouring, I gave everything a blueish tint to unify the elements in the image.
