Description
One of my favorite parts of Christmas when I was little was getting to see the local Nutcracker ballet performance; I remember being really sick one year and still not wanting to miss it, so I came in my PJs. This is a rendition not of the performers I saw growing up (I was actually used to seeing a black guy play Father Drosselmeier), but as something like the classic fairy tale might have had; granted, there's a little over a 75 year gap between the written German fairy tale, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," and Tchaikovsky's music for the ballet, not to mention about a thousand variations in the choreography for the actual performance (the one starring Mikhail Baryshnikov is SO SAD ). But overall, it's still a wonderful, enchanting holiday story to entertain the family with at the fireside; my favorite number from the Nutcracker is "In the Christmas Tree," which you can hear right here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LNwEW… . Hope you enjoy; thank you and happy holidays!Characters (left to right):
Father Drosselmeier
Clara/Marie (some editions change her name)
Nutcracker Prince
Sugarplum Fairy
Note: I once heard an interesting opinion about the expression "Happy Holidays"; one of my church leaders said it was bad to use "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" because it's taking the importance of Christ out of the holidays. This honestly makes no sense because the English word "holiday" is a variant of "holy day," which applies to all celebrations, including Christmas; so I guess if anyone says "Happy Holidays," you can either say "Merry Christmas" or go ahead and say "Happy Holidays" right back. Either way, God bless us, every one!
