For many, this was a very true experience; I, for one, thought both were fine. It's time people knew BOOKS and MOVIES are DIFFERENT; you have to put a certain kind of thought into each, they have certain components they must have by themselves in order to be good, and no matter what you do, it's not going to please everybody. My brother, for example, is an aggressive Tauriel hater; he sees no point to her and says she only got dumped in to increase feminine interests. I understand the LotR universe too well to not know that there's a reason elves and dwarves don't mix; they're literally of different kinds, made by two completely different beings, and have no common ground for any romantic interests whatsoever. However, I found the Tauriel/Kili ship to be adorable and understand the reasons for its existence. All the same, I did sense a certain amount of melodrama creeping into an already dramatic plot; while Smaug and the actual Battle of the Five Armies are essentially the very best parts (the dwarf weapons are the absolute bomb), my greatest disappointment was not getting to see Beorn the Bear squish Bolg.
