While I'm not really a fan of cinematic puppetry (e.i., Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal); mostly because they're just really ugly; the Muppets are a huge exception. Muppet Treasure Island is possibly the best Treasure Island movie ever made; I've only ever seen 2 others, and one was Treasure Planet. While I love the adorkable relationship between the captain and the doctor in Planet, and as awesome as Emma Thompson is, you just can't go wrong with Kermit the Frog.

The biggest drawback to the Muppets version is the character of Jim; personally, I feel Jim Hawkins from Treasure Planet is a far more developed character than the 13-year-old soprano from the Muppets. I don't want to say that being abandoned by his father is better than having a dead father, but Jim's character is affected in a much more radical (and, while I wouldn't say "better," I'd definitely say "cooler") way than just having his dad die would have. And then there's Long John Silver; Tim Curry is certainly hard to beat, but the father/son relationship between Jim and Silver plays out far more in depth in Planet than in the Muppets. If there could just be a perfect blend of the Muppet cast and humor combined with the fatherly affection Silver shares for Jim, I would call it the perfect rendition of Treasure Island. My highest concern would be the character Scroop; he is, quite frankly, one of the most terrifying villains ever, and I wouldn't put it past him to actually kill Sam the Eagle, which would be a devastating tragedy.
