Description This is Siren, a peregrine falcon from this year's clutch. She was raised by me and Jamie and she's the best of the bunch! Isn't she lovely?

She's only a few weeks old and fully fledged. She grew up in our house on the table (they have an instinct that means they don't go over the edge - because in the wild they nest on cliffs). It was VERY messy and made our house smell of nappies. In the middle of the night if I got up to go to the loo, I had to go through the living room and stepped in several squidgy piles of crap. Also she was sooooooo noisy. On the first day she was here, Jamie got tired of the noise instantly and retired to his room to wear earplugs and sleep off his headache. I'm used to it, after having an imprint buzzard, but even I think that being woken at 6am by a falcon saying "What's going on? The sun has risen and I HAVEN'T GOT ANY FOOD!" is less than cute.

We had another one at the time too, called Silouet (the Belgian named her). One morning we woke up to find that Siren had fledged...onto Silouet, who was very surprised.

Now Siren has her own aviary, comes to the lure and flies around lots. She loves preening my hair. She's definitely got a special place in my heart, such a lovely, gentle falcon. Of course she bites, foots and makes a lot of noise - all wild animals do - but she is the loveliest wild thing I have met so far.

I like this photo but I'd like to make it better - any suggestions welcome.

Geeze I'm gonna have to snitch your camera. Iso-1600? My camera goes all noisy at 400.

I think I'm gonna be adding you as a +watch.

hee hee! I'm gonna add you too, yeah it was a dead lucky buy my camera. I would have got the 400D but this one was going cheap because it belonged to someone who was doing reviews for a magazine, so Canon gave it to him for free. Normally these days I keep a low ISO though, cos I looove the smoothness hee hee...my old camera was a bitch at noise, even at low ISOs.

She is absolutely gorgeous, an amazing creature. Her eyes are amazing. The only bird of prey I've been up close and personal with is an American Kestrel, and the most striking feature was the eyes. You're very fortunate. I've noticed in your comments that you say they are extremely aggressive. Is that because they are birds of prey? All the birds I've raised have been very docile and sweet.

Many thanks for the comment. I would love to see an American kestrel up close, I have only ever seen them from a distance in Nevada but it would be awesome to be able to see their amazing colours and proportions a little closer. I think the eyes are very special, of any animal but a bird of prey's eyes are awe-inspiring, they are so big and deep and expressive...and of course so effective ha ha!

Some birds of prey can be aggressive, and at times most will be spiteful in one way or another. Most birds are like this, not just birds of prey: parrots, when they grow older, even if hand-raised they can bite (people who wear parrots on their shoulders get some nasty scars). This is why their parents usually kick them out...because they are fed up of them lol. But usually they bite and foot you through play - they treat you like another hawk, and other hawks like that kind of play. I once worked with a hand-raised eagle owl. He was not aggressive at all, but he was playful, and one time he "played" with my foot - the cuts healed aftr a week, the bruises took a little longer!

At the end of the day, wild animals don't act like pets, especially antisocial ones...what birds have you raised?

Yes, the kestrel was breath-taking. Unfortunately, I don't know if he made it or not. He was recovering from severe injuries from a car. It makes sense that wild animals wouldn't act like pets. It distresses me when people have wolves as pets; it never ends well. I've raised finches, lovebirds, and various orphaned wild songbirds because we have no rescue facility nearby. I imagine there is a huge difference in the personality of a hawk and a sparrow.

Aww :3 she's cute.
You should try some different lighting to make the pictures more dramatic.

THanks! I'll try some more contrast. Wish I could take a light into her pen...

maybe you should try cutting out some cardboard pieces and coating them with differnt colored papers like white, silver and black and using those cut outs to redirect the light the way you want it to look on her

Thanks! But you shouldn't be up so late.

...it's not even half ten! 'Late' is when it's too early to be 'early', ie, 00.23.
