Description It used to be fun, seeing what the dumb public made of hoods. Now, I am not one of those people who delights in the fact that the general public know nothing about falconry and makes fun of them because of it. Nobody knows everything about everything. But...some of the suggestions when it comes to hoods are golden. What is it? Why has the falcon got a hat on? I know what it is! It's a crash helmet because they dive at 200 miles an hour!

Silhouette doesn't like her hood that much, but she's getting better all the time and she's a lot better than she was. She was hooded since being a tiny chick, but unfortunately some people may have hooded her a bit skewiff, so she has let those few bad experiences get the better of her.

I like this photo because she's facing the right way. Of course, I didn't take these photos with the white background and me in them - Jamie did. But he's not on DA.

cool, thanks! Well it's never too late to start although sometimes it's better to just watch as an outsider. Then you can appreciate everything about them without having to give your whole life away...!! It's great that so many people appreciate birds of prey.

I read Frightful's Mountain (a sequel to My Side of the Mountain) it's about a peregrine falcon and the hoods are to keep the birds calm and stop them from trying to fly away.

lol the pubic *sigh* how I detest them so. 'Can you make the lemurs jump?' -yeah lemme get their circus outfits and cymbals >_<

I read that trilogy! I really liked it too.

Lol! Well, they can't be expected to know in detail about the subject - but some common sense wouldn't hurt from time to time. ("Make it flap its wings!")

Yeah, I have no idea what it's for. I would think the bird would freak out since they rely on their eyes for nearly everything.

They do rely on their eyes, but they are very stimulated by what they see. Hooding them removes the stimulation. If they can't see anything, then nothing can worry them. A hawk has to get used to her surroundings, so the hood should not be over-used, but it is useful to regulate the number of different things the hawk sees. So if you take her out on the road to get her used to cars, and a dog walks by, you can pop the hood on so she won't get stressed by seeing a dog AND cars.
It's also useful in the beginning of training. If you catch a new hawk and hood her, and put her on a perch with bells on, she will get used to sitting on a perch and having bells on her feet without knowing what they are. If you then pick her up, she'll get used to being picked up and sitting on the fist without knowing that it's a scary human picking her up. As soon as you remove the hood, she'll be wild again, but it's a lot easier to then get her used to the things she did while hooded.

The stressful thing for a hawk is not removing her power of vision. Oddly enough, binding a hawk's feet makes her more stressed out than anything else (not first hand experience, but so I am told).

I always think they look kinda grumpy with the hood on. Not being a falconer, my understanding of the hood is that it keeps the bird calm. Is that anywhere close to it?

lol, I'm not sure what it is but they definitely look more grumpy with the hood on. Yup, hooding does keep the hawk calm. If a big scary thing they're not used to walks past, they're oblivious to it! You can make sure that they only see what you want them to get used to.
