Description
Unfortunately this particular merlin is no longer around. These are my favourite of all birds of prey: I have never ever flown one so I cannot speak from experience, but certainly accounts and stories of them tell of a courageous, clever little hawk. Lark hawking is also my favourite kind of hawking: it is very elegant, like a dance, and unlike "off the fist" styles it can last a long long time. In the future I would like to keep merlins, but I probably won't be able to especially if I end up in New Zealand...Graphite on A5 fine grain cartridge paper. I was thinking of putting a background on it, but I can't think what would be delicate enough. Perhaps some whisps of charcoal would look good but they might also overpower the main subject. Any suggestions would be welcome.

BEAUTIFUL. I love merlins too -though I don't know much about them at all. ^_^"
Hm... yup, the background would be tricky. Perhaps a really light hint of sky or foliage. Perhaps a plain even... but I think you'd have to be careful; the horizon line would need to be put in carefully to highlight the right areas. Perhaps even a sloping line as in the side of a hill etc could work... but not sure how this would really work out. -_-"
beautiful pencil work; beautiful realism. ^^

*sigh* I hate you and your drawing prowess...but that's a well trodden topic so i shall move on.
Background wise, either a suggestion of the outdoors (field or something) or just leave it plain, because it really does work like that. I would suggest scanning it in again and weighting the paper to help with the uneven lighting (a sketchbook would work fine).
Aside from that, I have nothing but loud praise. It shows skill and style and competance of the subject. Nice one

Hmmm, interesting point - I could suggest something in the background like some light feathering to suggest leaves or something. Yeah the photo is pretty rubbish, but I'm not too bothered about that cos it's not like I'm gonna sell a photo of it or anything. I tried to photoshop it but it didn't work.
And thankyou for your kind words, remember we all have different skills and nobody is better than anybody else. Your cartoons are awesome and I could never draw anything as quirky and full of character. But thankyou for the loud praise! XXXX
