Description Influence Maps, one of the perfect memes on deviantART that has ever been created.

But... is the meme a good idea or maybe something that breaks some of deviantART's rules?

We can put pictures, photos, screencaps or even art.

But some people say that the meme breaks some of deviantART's rules. But practically over 1000, 5000 and even 8000 deviants have been breaking them recently.

In risk of having their influence maps reported, some deviants would warn them about some of the rules that they're breaking and they're forcing them to take their influence maps down.

Some people may think the meme's good, and some others think that it may be bad.

So in conclusion, I ask you...

Do YOU think that the Influence Map Meme is good idea or bad?

This was made just in case if my Influence Map was forced to be taken down. :/

Special Thanks to ~blue-peregrine for the idea of the influence poster idea!

Exactly what rules do they claim to be breaking? That we use images that are not our's?

You already know my views on this, but I will still write something here for others to see what are my views on this. Block me, hide my comment, like you did to my friend for merely telling you that drawing isn't that hard. Don't care, just trying to give you my two cents on this.

The original idea of the Influence Map was not a bad idea. The end result created by the swarm of meme-trend following deviants were bad. Yes, lots of deviants seem to be blindly following that trend of posting screenshots into the Map. Yes, the original creator seems to be supporting this and claiming that it is not "art theft". However.... No, the creator is not an admin and just because he approves of it doesn't mean that it is okay. No, 1000, 5000, 8000, not even 9001 deviants breaking the same rule would make anyone an exemption to the DeviantART's copyright policy.

And I read through some of the comments here and I've even read his opinion on the Artist's comment in the meme. First off, getting a Daily Deviation doesn't mean that all of deviantART supports it. Merely, it is there to help show the deviations to others because a gallery moderator (usually a volunteer one) thought that the deviation deserves to be show to a wider audience.

But like I said before, it is not the Influence Map that is the problem. It is the end result of it. And no one here is an exemption from the rules that everyone agreed upon when they created their accounts.

And Ian, we do understand what the Influence Map meme is suppose to be about. It is you who doesn't seem to understand DeviantART's rules regarding using artwork that doesn't belong to you. But it is not just use, it is a lot of other deviants, even `fox-orian .

"In risk of having their influence maps reported, some deviants would warn them about some of the rules that they're breaking and they're forcing them to take their influence maps down."

No one "forced" you to take it down. I can't say the same thing to anyone else who willingly took their downs, but I've never seen anyone forced you specifically. Merely suggestions, reminders, FAQ links, and some warnings.

Hope you enjoyed my two cents on this.

Thank you for sharing your $.02.

Don't worry, I won't hide, remove or do anything like that.

I just posted this motivational poster just to ask the people about the actual influence map meme if it's a good thing or a bad thing.

BTW, I can draw, It's just that I don't have enough free space to! :/

Don't give me that "I don't have enough free space" excuse. I barely have a table to work on. Actually, I usually draw on top of a hard book. And you don't see me complaining.

The meme it's self it a good idea. The fact that map it's self encourages rules breaking on DA is bad.
You don't have to use screenshots, you could draw what inspires you instead...just most people don't.
In time like this I think of it as advertising/supporting what inspires because that is the meme. Just since DA gives you copyright over everything you post, it is theft sadly and shouldn't be posted. Rules is rules and there are no acceptions.

So it's best not to post an influence map?

charlot-sweetie In reply to LooneyTunerIan [2011-02-03 23:28:32 +0000 UTC]

Best not too, just in case you banned because of it. Unless you draw what inspires you instead. :3 then it's just fanart in a awesome meme.

It's just that I wanted to put pictures and screencaps on my influence map.

deviantART has a problem with letting us people upload what we want to upload. :/

charlot-sweetie In reply to LooneyTunerIan [2011-02-04 00:15:56 +0000 UTC]

It's because they give us copyright over what we post.
It's good for us because if anything we upload here is stolen, then we have copyright on our side :3
Just because of the copyright, if you something that isn't our yours it gets copyrighted to you which then makes it theft.

If DA gave us the option to switch off having copyright over the images then it would be ok. It's not all DA's fault there must be rules even they have to follow in order to not have the site shut down.

If it means posting my own art, I'll never do another Influence Map meme like that again.

I've already voiced my opinion on the issue in the template's description. I boil it down to: "Think of it like printing out examples of your inspirations and bringing them to class to talk about them in front of your classmates. Would you consider that art theft? Are we doing anything different here? I surely don't think so."

Furthermore, there is no money being made here. There's nothing being made from this. It's a discussion with pictures. If there are artists out there who are bothered by finding their work shown as an inspiration to others, (displayed on this meme as something they look up to,) maybe those artists should consider not showing their work at all in public if you're that afraid of people being influenced by it, and therefore talking about it.

That's my honest opinion, anyway. And DeviantART itself seems to see it this way as well, which is why the influence map got a DD in the first place.

I concur ^^
I remember in handicraft, they'd ask us to give us examples of what inspired you.
then work out sketches. In my opinion this is exactly the same thing.

I'm very sorry, sir. I really wanted to do your meme.

It sounded fun.

But no matter what I do, I always get hit by the same rules:

FAQ #8: What are violations of the deviantART copyright policy?
FAQ #157: Can I use things created by other people in my submissions?
FAQ #306: Does "Crediting" let me use whatever I want?
FAQ #572: What does deviantART consider "Fan Art" to be?
FAQ #578: What does deviantART consider to be a proper desktop screenshot?

And I get forced into taking my influence map down.

I really liked your influence map and all, but there are some deviants out there who don't understand about it.

I just don't get why some people get so uptight about it. It confuses and angers me, hahaha. You'd really think people would like having a discussion about their / other people's work.

Yeah, I'm with ya.

What is the problem with discussing about using other people's work for a collage/influence map?
