Description
Groo and Groot… two things that go together like, well, a cartoon idiot with a sword and a talking tree.
Sergio Aragones Groo was/is one of my favourite comics from my youth and had a such a blast watching GoTG this was bound to happen.
Oh, and my friend drew a fantastic Groot… go check it out if you like... www.deviantart.com/art/He-is-G…

I just noticed the '04 date, threw me off. lol.
Anyways, very cool. I met Sergio in 1987 and gave him a caricature that I drew for him, he was so thankful that he drew me a cartoon with Me in it AND all of his characters and even mine (at the time) it took him over an hour!
For sure - it will be included in the "Cartooning and Caricature" chapter in my forthcoming Book, "My Adventures as an Artist - the first 40 years"

I was just thinking of you the other day and wondering how you're going!
Whoops... that's definitely the wrong date.. will fix that!
Awesome story... you're a lucky man. I met Sergio once, but have no tale of special art or anything!

Jees, I wonder if I still have that comic - I remember putting Groo in a plastic sleeve and putting him on a shelf. Do you remember Sergio Aragones' characters in the margins of Mad magazine? Don Martin. Mort Drucker. Gah, I haven't thought about them in years.
Thanks, Loopydave!

I lent my Groo #1 to my friend and her mother threw it out! She bought me another one years later, but it cost a lot more by then.
I do remember Sergio's margin drawings... and I'm a big Mort Drucker fan.
Cheers man!

Funny, my mother didn't like Mad, either. I had to sneak them into the house and hide them, kind of like the Playboys, later. Which reminds me, wasn't Harvey Kurtzman doing Little Annie Fannie then, along with his work for Mad?

I know he worked on Little Annie Fannie in the 60's, but I don't know if there was an overlap with his MAD stuff or not.

You made me curious, so I looked him up on Wikipedia. Pretty amazing guy, all in all. He worked with Woody Allen and John Cleese, and taught Robert Crumb. Someone ought to do a hardback cartoon biography of him.

Wow. I used to collect Groo The Wanderer comics when I was a young teen. I idolized Sergio Aragones growing up. This is a real blast from the past.

Not as an ongoing series, though there was a recent 'Groo vs Conan' mini series that I have yet to pick up. Sounds brilliant though!

Sure. Read a lot of issues and laughing my ass off in the process^^
If there is one thing that can be said about Groo, that is that he was as lethal to his friends as to his foes.
