Description
Occasionally I get someone asking me about painting hair - not sure I'm the right person to ask, as I'm still working on doing a better job at it - but here's my general approach...- Work up from the large overall shape first with general tones and shadows
- Start working out the ribbon like clusters
- Add the small groups and single hairs, usually lighter than the hair groups below it.
- Add the final highlights
Breaking hair down into ribbons or clumps helps save a little time, but there is no real way of getting around just drawing a whole lot of hair strands if you want a somewhat realistic look. A smarter person than me would map out the hair a bit better before they paint, but I enjoy a little 'winging it' as I go along kind of thing, particularly if its a bit stylised like this particular piece.

I see you turned the sloppy highlight (in stage 1) to smooth highlight at stage 2?
how you did that? Did you use Smudge tool?

It was some time ago so I cant be exactly sure.... I usually just paint over it with a soft brush though in this case I may have blurred the area with the gaussian blur in the blur filters in photoshop... either way would give a similar result.

Try setting the opacity of your brush very low (10-20%) and gradually building up the grade with a soft brush...

going from left to right is the first image used as a generalized tones, then use them as a "palette" for your brushes or do you actually work the colors as you would on canvas with oils.

Not sure what you mean... basic approach is paint the base shape and colours, paint the ribbons or clumps of hair next and then paint the finer strands. Sometimes I paint each of those sections as separate layers over each other, other times I just paint it all on the same layer, just depending on how I feel. There really is no right or wrong way with these things - I'm self taught and the best thing is to do is play around and see what works best for you.

She asked the hair dresser for one of those "'60's do's, you know, like a bob, but with curly bits down the bottom". Fortunately the hair dresser understood what she was after
