Description
Old movie time again.... watched the 1958 'Hercules', starring Mr America, Steve Reeves. Here Hercules is busy on his lesser known 13th labour - taking all the metal spears in the armoury and bending them into funny animal shapes. Apparently he was a hoot at kids parties.
Pencil sketch, colour workΒ in photoshop.

It was the original Steve Reeves Hercules... though he did bend a metal lamp stand in the sequel, 'Hercules unchained'. I think bending metal things was his signature move or something
Cheers!

So, he invented the first papyrus-clip - what we know now as the paperclip?

Thanks Danny! The movies were fun... though it would be nice if there were some better quality transfers of his films available.
Cheers!

that is true, its always fun to go back through your art and find the hidden gems in there. who is the girl in the background anyone in particular?

She's Iole (played by Sylva Koscina), daughter of Pelias, king of Iolcus and Hercules love. Witty, wise and charming... just not good at bending iron bars apparently.

Looking good...since your strolling down "CLASSIC" Avenue then might I suggest CLASH of The Titans or maybe The Odyssey?

Thanks! I've seen the more recent remake of Clash of the Titans... but I'm embarrassed to admit I have yet to watch the old version. Must correct that at some point!
Cheers!

OMG! I actually remember Mr. Reeves. Time to get myself a wheelchair, methinks. The name "Herc" reminds me of the old animated series where that stupid centaur kept saying, "Oh, Herc! Oh, Herc!" Your artwork is amazing, as always.

Yes, gone are the days of filming and capturing emotions and styles, close ups,etc the way directors did. Everything now is more geared towards CGI and far fetched action sequences with superhuman acts, etc.Β

After pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey and razor filled pinatas bent-bar-bunnies are the greatest hazard at children's birthday parties.Β I have only a vague memory of the movie but I recognized it right away... although the Hollywood mini-togas helped jog it out.

Those old 'Sword and Sandal' movies were the only ones I know where the men wore shorter skirts than the women
And yes, weaponised strongmen made for a certain 'Darwinian' approach to childrens parties
