Description
Starting my own 'How fast is your spaceship?' week of scifi nerdiness. Today, Star Wars...What can I say, I love my scifi!
Pencil, ink on paper, Paint in photoshop.
EDIT: Fixed the spelling of 'Millennium' (d'oh!) and added the parsec disclaimer. If only George Lucas had put one in in his movie

To be just, STAR WARS is much more "space opera" than scifi, but we won't quibble!

Loopydave In reply to Chaosfive-55 [2014-12-07 12:57:17 +0000 UTC]
Quibbles. Aren't they from Star Trek?
And I will concede your point good sir... guess I should clarify it as loving anything 'space' - whether its scifi, opera, comedy or interdimensional time traveling blobs from Arcanus 9.

Great parody.Β
With regard to the Kessel run**
** Even less impressive than it sounds given that a 'parsec' is a measure of length and not a measure of time.

Ain't parsec unit of distance, not time?
π: 0 β©: 5
HaraSurya In reply to Coinimus [2014-12-07 17:46:30 +0000 UTC]
A parsec isn't just a unit of distance, it's a unit of distance that relies on the Earth-centric Astronomical Unit as a part of its definition. It's the "parallax of one arc-second" and is usually measured by comparing a star's position in the sky six months apart (and thus on opposite ends of the Earth's orbit around the sun, which is one AU).

Uzik In reply to Coinimus [2014-12-07 14:52:19 +0000 UTC]
yes, it is distance, but they later retcon'ed it. I still think it was just sloppy writing. Now they've made up a reason why it makes senseΒ to avoid embarrassment.

Arteon In reply to Coinimus [2014-12-07 09:45:11 +0000 UTC]
I always had that problem, but one of the books actually had a good answer for that. It stated that the faster a ship could go, the closer it could pass a gravity well, like a star, without being pulled into normal space. Therefore, the less powerful your hyperdrive, the longer your course had to be to avoid obstacles.

Lokied In reply to Arteon [2015-07-17 05:32:56 +0000 UTC]
Some more nerdiness:
In later books, the Kessel system was identified as a black hole nursery which held the planet the drugΒ 'spice' (no, not arakis) came from. The, "Kessel run," was the path a smuggler would take, through the dangerous black holes, to get to and from the spice planet while avoiding authorities. The path around the black holes could be quite lengthy. The faster your ship could travel, the shorter the path; where the increased speed allowed ships to travel closer to the black holes without being sucked in, thus cutting the corners so to speak.
If these descriptions are correct (i.e. still some form of canon), then measuring a, "kessel run," in distance is entirely plausible and would be an effectiveΒ indicator of the ship's speed.

Loopydave In reply to Coinimus [2014-12-07 09:16:45 +0000 UTC]
Indeed... Han Solo is just being lazy and wants you to do the math... distance to Kessel divided by the parsecs . It doesn't make sense, but it is the line he uses in the movie.
