Description
Initially spent about a week on this particular illustration and was unhappy and frustrated with the way it was turning out, so I've just left it sitting on my hard drive for the last 12 months, where it has mocked me ever since. Finally cracked, fixed the stuff that wasn't working and finished it off. Put lots of detail into it, much of it completely lost at this size, but it was great to get this bug bear off my back!Pencil sketch on paper, painted in photoshop.

Thanks! For some reason, patience has always been a strong suite when it comes to my work, but unfortunately I need to learn more of it when out in the 'real world' dealing with people!

Love the idea - it's just too cute I'm assuming that it wasn't a commissioned project - or it would not have sat around on the backburner for 12 months
I'm glad you finished it. I may have mentioned it in one of my comments to another painting of yours. I like the way the face doesn't look just run-of-the-mill - it looks like it belongs to a specific, real person. Just one little thing I noticed...she doesn't seem to be focussing exactly on the little cow - if that was intended at all.
Besides the humorous aspect, your pictures always have a little something very lovable or even sweet to them - well, to me at least

Yes, it definitely a personal project - began, like most of my stuff as a silly little cartoon and I liked the idea and just got a bit carried away. Glad I finished it too - though now that I look at it, there are a number of things I'd like to fix, including her focus but they will have to wait a bit. Am very glad you find something sweet in my work - its something someone very close to me says too! Thanks for taking the time to look at the picture closely - always appreciate it when you come by my friend

What a fun, great illustration. Not just because of your draftsmanship, but also because of your design.
An instant favorite. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks my friend! Cant really go wrong with the classic clean background with circle motif - worked for JC Leyendecker, Norman Rockwell used it on some of his Saturday Evening Post Cover etc.

You are welcome. Ah yes; Classic draftsmen, and designers, with a great sense of humor (traits you share with them).
On a related note: Budplant.com has a relatively new J.C. Lyendecker artbook out.
It has been quite awhile since a collected volume of his work has been available
to the public.

Thanks for the heads up - its a great book, isnt it! Picked it up just recently, which was real nice because I also have the 1974 Michael Schau book of his art, bought cheap about 12 years ago coz someone had cut a lot of the colour prints out
. I also have the 1995 trading card set and the 1996 poster book, rather light on pages, but lovely large images. If you cant tell, I'm a bit of a fan!

You're welcome.
That's funny, I picked up Michael's book from Ebay a few years ago; it's a very
good publication.
How do you like the trading card set? I was thinking of picking it up, but
would like to know how the reproductions look on the cards (I wasn't impressed
with how the Frank Frazetta cards came out).
It's cool to be a fan. There are incorporations of line and color in his work that
still inspire me.

The quality of the cards are quite nice - the main problem with them is that you're looking at great images on quite a small scale that doesn't do them justice, but thats the drawback of the format, not the reproduction quality. Aside from that, and I'm sure there is a huge overlap between the images on the cards and whats in the new book, I still like them!

She looks a little like a young hot Sally Fields!
Just like all your stuff, this one is breath-takingly good. What knocks my socks off the most the variation in textures. Her thin cotton shirt actually looks skin tight, and creases gently against her body. Her radiant skin glows in warm tones of pinks and reds, and shimmers lightly. The rougher fabric of her chaps and gloves crumple, and fold. The wooden hobby horse looks stiff and flat, by comparison to the shine of her body, her skates, and the adorable toy cow.
This illo is like a visual potpourri, a veritable feast for the retinas! I love your stuff.
You rock, Dave.

Thanks my friend! I really am fascinated by the way different materials behave - the way the various types of cloth fold, how they 'highlight' differently, reflections in metal, what makes a good 'lastic' etc. to the point that it sometimes dictates what I want to paint at the time. It is always pleasing to me when someone else notices these things too - and those kind of observation skills are a critical component in creating ones own work (well at least I think so anyway!).
Oh, and I can see the Sally Fields thing too!
