I suppose thats true. Zero is kind of unique though, in that it represents nothing - some calculators and computers even designate it NaN (not a number). The romans didn't have a 'numeral' for 0. The history of zero is fascinating - BBC did a show all about it a number of years back - got to find the recording and listen to it again I reckon!

But romans (and may others having zero-less numbers) were mostly dating and counting with their notation, barely computing. Even if not explictly displayed, the simplest counting frame implicitly uses the "zero" concept.

Admittedly, it's more abstract that other numbers, and is the key of position-based representation of numbers (whatever the base and script used for digits), so yeah, it's history is more interesting than that of e.g. two ...

Being a computer scientist, i have to point out that Not A Number isn't used for zero, but rather for oddities such as infinity, 0/0, pow(0,0).
