Wow, you did it. Fantastic painting. Skin tones and scales are really vibrant. I wish she was looking at the little dragon, but that really isn't that big of deal. I think this is my favorite of your work so far. AWESOME!

The woman is well done as usual Bye.

Thanks! Painting the rocks gave me real trouble for some reason - they look the simplest thing in the picture, but took nearly as long to paint them as the big dragon.

Yeah, that's not an easy thing to do, but at the end, your render looks very nice !

cheers for changing it. I had some other things that stuck out a little but not sure about them no need to change.

shadow is too red on ground (shouldn't it be more blue?)

it doesn't seem like she is looking at the dragon

Damn, Dave. Do you use reference, mate?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Loopydave In reply to CarlPearce [2010-04-03 10:32:14 +0000 UTC]

! Short answer - Really depends on the illustration.
Longer answer. I generally start with an idea, sketch it up and then find references for details Im after or dont work as well made up - I have a maniquin in my studio which I use sometimes for referencing cloth folds, a cupboard full of boots, shoes, clothing and props. I draw from stuff sitting on my desk, I take photos of objects, search out other photos and make stuff up or pull it from my imagination. I call it frankensteining and its probably why I am so slow . Back to the short answer though - it depends on the illustration, but the more 'realistic' something needs to be, and the fewer times I've drawn that kind of thing before, the more having some kind of reference comes into play.
Sorry about the long winded answer, but like quantum mechanics, programming a VCR or deciding on the right music to draw to, its complicated!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CarlPearce In reply to Loopydave [2010-04-05 10:57:50 +0000 UTC]

Sounds pretty much like my set up, then. I've actually used the phrase "Frankensteining" myself in the past. I just love how smooth and spot-on your figures are. I imagined you in some sunny studio with some hot aussie surf chick modeling for you.

The way materials and clothing reacts are always the thing I get paranoid about and so use ref. More often than not, I'll use some photo ref and then wing it by changing positions and guessing how elements will react when moved about etc.

I like to take photos for some things but when I don't have the time, mostly, I use images from catalogues, magazines and Getty. Look for something similar to my original thumbnail doodle and break the reference down so it turns into what's in my head and not what I used as ref.

I also use the in-built camera on my mac a lot. Ha ha ha. Some odd photos on there.
