"Mom, Dad, I'd like you to meet my girlfriend, Kori."Dick put his arm around his girlfriend and smiled proudly at his parents. Kori offered a small, slightly hesitant smile too, and raised her hand in a wave.
"It is...very nice to meet you. Dick has told me a lot about you and I have been very eager to visit you both."
She stopped, looking slightly uncomfortable. Dick rubbed her shoulder encouragingly. Unsure, she glanced up at her boyfriend's face and seemed to draw courage from it. With a deep breath, she turned back to his parents and this time gave them a genuine smile. She placed her arm around Dick's waist and lifted her head high.
"It is an honour to meet the parents Dick speaks so highly of. I am hopeful we will become very close."
She glanced at Dick, who nodded his approval, and they turned away.
~~~
Taking a small, wrapped bundle from his wife, Dick turned to his parents, his face alight.
"Here she is, your granddaughter. Isn't she beautiful?"
He held out the baby girl for them to see, gazing down at his tiny daughter with adoration on his face. A little face peered out from the folds of the blanket, a pair of bright blue eyes gazing curiously up at her grandparents. The baby raised a small pink fist, as though reaching out to them. Dick kissed the hand and pulled her close.
"Her name's Mar'i. After you, mom. It was Kori's idea."
He smiled over his shoulder at his wife, who was sitting in the armchair looking tired but pleased. Dick had wanted to visit his parents as soon as possible after Mar'i had been born, and she was only too happy to oblige. She was their first grandchild after all.
Dick happily chattered away about Mar'i for another hour, before the small family left. As they walked through the living room door, Dick turned back to his parents and waved.
"I love you, mom, dad."
And he left.
~~~
"This is it guys, we're here."
Dick strolled to the edge of the cliff, accompanied by his parents. It was the height of summer; the sky was a bright, clear blue, the clouds fluffy and white, the sun beating down upon the foamy water below.
"I know how much you've always loved this place, it seemed right that we should be here today."
Dick looked at his parents long and hard.
John Grayson, his father, the man who had always been there for him. The man that would protect his family at any cost. The man he had always aspired to be.
Mary Grayson, his mother, the woman who was always so gentle and kind. The woman he could always find comfort in. The woman who loved her little Robin more than life itself.
18 years ago today, his parents had been brutally taken from him. 18 years ago, he had promised himself his parents would still be a big part in his life. 18 years ago, he had decided he would not part from his parents until he was ready.
That day was today.
Dick took a deep breath and glanced over his shoulder. Kori stood several feet behind him, an encouraging smile on her face. Clutching her hand was their three year old daughter, whose eyes were so very like his own...like his mother's. The child smiled at her father too. Dick nodded at them and turned to look over the water. Without a word, he removed the lids of each urn and took one in each hand. And in one fluid motion, he emptied the contents of each urn out. The ashes were immediately caught by the wind. They danced through the air, swirling and mingling. Dick watched them for several long moments. He felt a tugging on his jeans and leaned down to scoop his daughter into his arms. He put his arm around Kori who had come to stand beside him and he smiled.
"Thanks for everything guys. You've been the best parents anyone could ask for."
And despite the warm tears that gathered in his eyes and dropped down his cheeks, Dick was happy. Because he had set his parents free.
The Flying Graysons were flying once more.
