Description
somebody dun messed with her lil sis and Gleaming Shield is about to open up a can of whoop assold old old drawing i decided to finish
Shining Armor gets hit with good ol' rule 63-aka gender bender
I like Shining Armor okay, I guess (especially his character in the IDW comics), but I feel he'd be a lot more interesting as a mare. It would add to that whole sisterhood/female empowerment thing MLP: Fim has going for it, and I haven't really seen too many strong female leader characters who like corndogs and Dungeons and Dragons and rescuing ancient lost empires from malevolent kings
I also ship Gleaming Shield with Princess Cadence, so lesbian magic horse princesses yay
I tried out some new, more experimental coloring on this one. And I really like how her bodytype came out-like a sturdier Fleur di Lis. Also, I don't know who originally thought up the name "Gleaming Shield" for a r63 Shining Armor but it wasn't me, credit should go where it is due

She looks super cool. But BSBFF doesn't sound good at all. And we have plenty of sisterhood/female empowerment in MLP, it's almost as female-dominated as Yuru Yuri already.

Exactly. My vote is to throw in even more female characters. MLP has such a wonderful, diverse cast of female characters, it's quite an anomaly in media. That's why I love the show so much-dat female representation and emphasis of camaraderie and sisterhood. It really doesn't get enough credit.
to be fair "BBBFF" sounds sorta dumb too

Throwing in more female characters is fine! But it's good to have at least a couple of strong male characters (strong characterization, not strong like horses.) And BBBFF is an awesome acronym. It's just...so many Bs.

We can make our own lesbian pony warriorxprincess story without Hasbro's help.

Personally I would have called her Chainmail Bikini...and she is married to Prince (Badass) Baritone.Β Although she nearly married King Cocoon at one point.

Ha! Chainmail Bikini, that's good. Female armor in games and comics is ridiculous. XD

Personally, I like the rule 63 name for Shining Armor as Sparkling Aegis. But this pic is very good, regardless which name you call her by.

Sorry, it's a phrase I use when someone does something I enjoy. On the show they made the whites of Shining's eyes an odd green color so that you could see them against his white coat color, I have a strong distaste for this.

This is gorgeous! I agree with you about the whole sisterhood thing, though... But then if they went the same route with her marrying royalty, it would have made a male character in a strong position of power; the lesser of two evils with a male Shining Armour, I suppose! uvu
'Cause, sadly, there's no way they'd include a lesbian relationship in a show originally aimed at younger viewers. 8c
... Personally, I don't think she needs a name change, though. I know you didn't come up with the name, but Gleaming Shield doesn't roll off the tongue like Shining Armour; the latter is a gender neutral name, anyway. A lot of genderbent names seem that way, really... Not sounding all that great, I mean.
In most cases, the original names could be kept without them sounding too 'girly' or 'boyish'. Rainbow Dash being a prime example omfg; never understood the need to change it...

Thank you! Yeah, I agree that "Gleaming Shield" and the other genderbent names don't sound fantastic, but I think their purpose is really just to distinguish the r63 characters from their canon counterparts. I'd rather she still be called Shining Armor. I even think the girlier names, like Twilight and Pinkie Pie could be kept for their male counterparts, because the show is about defying gender norms, right? XD
Aww, no lesbian ponies? Damn it Hasbro, children are more receptive to stuff like that than you think. >/ It's adults that throw hissy fits about the evil gay agenda
Making Princess Cadence a dude would take a bit of the female empowerment message away, because Shining would be a damsel in distress during Canterlot wedding. But then it would me that in the Crystal Empire, she picked up and hurled her husband across the sky. That's too awesome for me to handle

I do agree that the name Gleaming Shield doesn't sound good. I like to call her Aegis, after an unbreakable shield in Greek mythology.

Probably because Shining Armor isn't the most...interesting character, and doesn't provide much personality to work with. Now r63 Discord or r63 Chrysalis, those are fun characters to draw

The muzzle threw me off for a bit since it's still rectangular rather than...curved?Β I guess?Β But the rest of the body was pretty clearly feminine, and then of course the description.Β
Still love it though!Β

Yeah, I see what you're saying. Shining Armor's head shape is pretty distinctive and I didn't want to abandon it for a generic cute MLP mare face. It doesn't look all that feminine but I think it adds a feeling of "toughness" to her character design
Thank you.
