Description
"Constant vigilance is required to keep Equestria safe."idk, quickie doodle
an attempt to make Flash Sentry more interesting, I guess
i mean the dude's in the military there's gotta be something interesting about him
changed up his design a little, not a fan of his pony form having the same lame boy band hair as his human counterpart. Gave him a more military cut
i don't really dislike flash as a character (he doesn't have enough personality for me to form a real opinion of him), but I do dislike how his character was constructed. He's a generic one note "perfect boyfriend" object for Twilight to awkwardly fawn over, which could have been cute if handled better. (Not gonna get into the idea of Twilight, a pony, finding a human attractive). It's kind of frustrating, as MLP has churned out way more interesting male characters- Braeburn, Cheese Sandwich, Big Mac, Bulk Biceps...so why is Flash so bland? There's gotta be more to the guy. What are his hobbies, besides bumping into Twilight and having awkward pseudo-romantic chemistry? Does he like to read? Does he like chick flicks? What the heck does his cutie mark mean? What's his special talent? i wanna like the guy but there ain't a lot to work with

Yeah, fanon's got its work cut out for it.Β I like to imagine familial neglect and some residual emotional abuse from dating Sunset Shimmer.Β He tries to keep everything bottled up and be sunny, but when it's given an outlet, his resentment and need for attention bubble to the surface.

I basically think that one of the people who work on MLP is a shipper of TwiAmour
and because it's for kids they couldn't do that
so the next best thing?
Make a stallion exactly like a teenaged Shining Amour. I mean, he's a part of the royal guard, he plays guitar,he's all goofy for a lady and adores his hair.
Does it not sound like a younger Shining Amour?

Or there's also "did you just got up from getting punched by Cthulu" since pegasus magic include shoc resistance. So that bitch slap through a wall while hurting like hell will leave him unharmed. When you see a broken bone on a pegasus it's strain related like trying to stop a crash or having a limb crushed.

In equestria girl he is the teenage boy heartrob stereotype. In MLP he could become the new equestrian royal guard captain and set a worf effect by showing him as a competant and pretty badass guy during normal episodes but who gets his ass kicked by the villain of the two parters like they tried with the alicorns (Discord only beatable using the McGuffin, Super charged Chrysalis pulling a win on Celestia, Discord's contangy plan being super effective, Tirek spell making face to face battle a bad idea, and finaly Starlight being a more talented fighter then Twilight)

He has the same function as most male characters in shoujo anime. to be "the cool guy" and be viewed as a prize for the lead main girl to eventually win as a bauble thereby making her superior in status to other girls she knows as she is now coupled with "the cool guy".
He is not allowed to have a personality because in giving him one he could come across as either threatening towards the main girl's own wants and desires and he may actually form an identity apart from the main girl's own. If he has a separate identity this might suggest he has his own goals and wants in life which might give the main girl and her proxy audience second thoughts about making him their prize-to-be-won. Not giving him a personality outside of being "cool" to make him semi-desirable, is done as a convenience because it leaves the audience's conscience free to derail his life and have it completely focus on the lead female and her romance.
He literally has no reason to exist outside of being the trophy.
*rubs temples*

Give him some fighting skills and competance as a protector of the peace then make the big bad beat him easily and he can join Shining Armor and Celestia on the worf effect

I agree. He has the potential as a character, but with either the writers either undermining him or just slotting him with that typical role ruins that character potential.

I really like this drawing. The expression and the scars make me feel like there's more going on and the muscle tone gives a great hint at his athleticism. Also, dig the shading. ^_^
As for Flash's personality, I want to like the character, but you're right they don't give you a lot to work with. So he's my theory based on what they do give us; feel free to use or ignore this as you see fit. ^_^ :
His human self has a creative streak with an interest in art(he liked helping with posters) and a driving love of rock music; he's in a garage band with his friends after all. He also has a car of his own and seems to have at least a hobbyist interest in muscle cars. How any of that relates to his pony self is hard to say. Maybe he's interested in Equestrian machinery...or trains? He's in the Royal Guard so there's some degree of discipline and dedication in him there and he's bound to be at least trained in basic combat so he's not a total push-over. The only common trait I can think of between both versions is he tries to be helpful and loyal to his friends and maybe that translates to a general philanthropic personality. Breaking down his cutie mark the lightning bolt in the show is associated with speed, but he's also got a shield so he's a protector by nature. So He's probably like a combination of Rainbow Dash and Shining Armor. A speed-demon, adrenaline-junkie, who's loyal to his friends and is always looking out for the little guy.

You know the more i think about it. Maybe FlashSentry not having an personality kinda works for some story aspects. I mean the sole purpose of flash existence is to be Twilight's first crush, and sure they have as much as chemistry as whet matches in humid air, as they have nothing in common and what they do have of different doesn't fit together, and every time they are on scene they just blush and don't really try to know each other, i think that the only time he does something worthy of affection from her was when he exposed to Luna the unaltered photographs of Sunset sabotaging the party( did i mention that i found the Equestria Girls to be stupid beyond all reason?). Anyway my point is that Flash and Twilight have not real love for each other but rather "first love", which is an fancy word for "the person that at the first sight makes you massively horny and wants to bang her/him until you both can't walk properly for a month, and that attraction has nothing to do with matching personalities or ideals, but rather how hot and yummy the other one is", Sure it sounds really prude and shallow but guess what? it reality, especially in when you are an teenager, which is that period where we think that we got everything figured out, where we desperately want evaluation, where your hormones quick in like an jack hammer in the nuts, and you try to do an 360 with your neck at every chick with a mini-short and a thong(or muscle bond studs in tight shirts for those that like boys), So DHX decides to do a movie that is basically High School Musical meets MLP, so of course where were going to see this annoying first love bullshit because that happens to everyone. Sure they are not as explicit and raw as i'm describing it(it's an kids show after all), But you it cannot be denied that they had this line of thought when they made Flash, Hell they don't even dare to suggest that he is in fact her one and true love, as with each sequel he becomes less and less relevant(if that's even possible), in the scene of Friendship Games where he bumps into his world's Twilight that doesn't know who he is and he is confused as fuck and that is never addressed again in the rest of the movie, that is basically DHX telling the audience "Hey you remember that generic guitar boy that Twilight has the hots for? well that is all he is and will ever be, an momentary sexual desire that may as well fade way in place of a new one or none at all, yeah kids that happens to everyone", Which is an good lesson for teenager, That you first crush is probably not the love of your live, the cartoon Daria had one of this lessons taught very well, as the titular protagonist is also an bookworm that has the hots for an boy that plays in a band that changed their name every week, they did go out together, they fond out that besides their mutual physical attraction, they where not for each other, he turns out to be nothing then an shallow loser. I am not saying that it is fine for Flash to walk on this route, as with smart writing, he could have an genuine personality and STILL be only an high school crush. But he is what he is, an momentary tool for the development for an actual fully fledged character and for teaching an important aspect in life.......that the person you fond amazingly attractive.........was nothing nothing else besides that, and you move on.

Flash was disliked because unlike the background ponies, he was supposed to have a well-defined, likable personality. He didn't. His character has a lot of weight in the narrative-he's the first canon (reciprocated) love interest for one of the mane six, yet he's utterly two-dimensional.
π: 1 β©: 1
toohot17 In reply to Lopoddity [2016-03-05 15:10:31 +0000 UTC]
He wasn't the main focus. We weren't gonna see everyΒ bit of his personality. And he's a good person. He went out of his way to clear Twilight's name. You're telling me that him being a good person isn't likable or something? He had a personality. The background ponies didn't (minus Vinyl, Octavia, and a few others ). There is no reason for him to get thisΒ much hate while pointless characters get so much love.
Please stop saying he didn't have a likable personality. It is not objective fact. Others like him.
Why do so many Bronies state their opinions as facts?
And just like others did with the BG ponies, give him a personality yourself. But give him one based off of what's already in the movie, not some opinion you're trying force on him. The warm, gentle smile he gave Twilight after she bumped into him doesn't even match this hard, cold look you gave him. He would most likely be an adorkable goof like the human Flash. To balance Twilight out, seeing as she's the uptight one that worries over silly things.
I doubt you'd care about what I said, but that's what I see when I watch the show and movies.
Have a great day.

"He wasn't the main focus. We weren't gonna see everyΒ bit of his personality."
This is a poor defense. Other characters have demonstrated far more interesting personalities and quirks with far less screen time than Flash had. Secondly, Flash isn't a simple background pony, he is an important supporting character/love interest. There was no reason for him to be as bland as he was.
"Please stop saying he didn't have a likable personality. It is not objective fact. Others like him. Why do so many Bronies state their opinions as facts?"
1.) I am not a brony and 2.) Well, you saying he does have a likable personality is stating opinion as fact. We could talk in circles this way forever. But I am going to point to the general, prominent fan dislike of Flash, and say that just maybe, there's a reason for it
"And just like others did with the BG ponies, give him a personality yourself. But give him one based off of what's already in the movie, not some opinion you're trying force on him."
Yeah see, his personality in the movie is exactly what the problem is. His movie personality is entirely one-note. There isn't really anywhere to go from "generic nice guy". Also, movie Flash isn't "adorkable" (which would actually be charming), he is clumsy. His slight clumsiness is a cheap tactic to give him something resembling a character flaw, and it still doesn't work.Β Real characters have real flaws and nuances and struggles. I trashed his movie personality and took him in a new direction, and lookee. People like my new Flash. Except you, but I won't begrudge you for your attachment to movie Flash. Whatever floats your boat, just don't complain about it on my art.
