Description

I dunno if you guessed it, but I like drawing cute little ponies....fanart of a children's cartoon. And every so often, someone feels the need to tell me that my personal interest is stupid, childish, cancerous....."cringe-y". Boy howdy, do I hear that word tossed around a lot. Cringe, cringe, cringe. We're all afraid of making something cringe-worthy. Something that could end up in those lovely "Bad OC" cringe compilations. I see other artists, especially young creators, getting policed and attacked for creating something that could-gasp!- be interpreted as the dreaded Mary Sue. So artists stifle themselves. Can't make your OC too colorful. Don't you dare make them related to a canon character! Better watch that backstory, lest somebody decry your character as an edgelord. You can have a nerdy interest, but you better not be too fucking passionate about it. Watch yourself. Don't be too different. Don't be cringe-y.

So here's my question to ye gatekeepers of content, ye knowers of all things cringe-worthy, ye adamant enforcers of creative conformity...........Who cares?

Really. Why. Why is "cringe" an issue? So what if someone makes an edgy black-and-red OC, or a sparkly mary sue alicorn princess? So what if somebody makes up an over-powered self-insert and ships them with a canon character? So what if somebody dares to be unironically passionate about a fandom or interest considered less-than-cool? Who cares if people have imperfect, cliche-riddled characters they love?

Cringe culture is mean-spirited. It demands creators conform. It's perpetuated by people who, quite oddly, get really bent out of shape at the sight of people unironically enjoying harmless things.

I say forget it. Trample it. Let people have fun. Especially don't be cruel to young creators- nobody learns to be a skilled artist or writer overnight. And this is by no means a statement against criticism, even harsh criticism.....but there's a big, big difference between giving constructive criticism, vs choosing to crap on somebody for having a "cringe-y" interest. Clicking on someone's work to tell them that it's cringe, or cancer, or that they should kill themselves.....that's not criticism. It's cruelty. The only point of it is to discourage and shame creators, often young, vulnerable ones. There is nothing heroic or helpful about this behavior. This is what I am standing against. To make things clear, I am not anti-criticism. I am anti-bullying.

Idk. I'm a teacher with an Art Education degree, and I believe one of the most important things is to encourage people's interest in the arts, not push them away (out of a mean-spirited attempt to seem cooler by proxy). My favorite Mister Rogers quote (applies to artists of all ages):

"Do you like to draw with crayons? I'm not very good at it. But it doesn't matter. It's the fun of doing it that's important. Now, I wouldn't have made that if I just thought about it. No matter how anybody says it is....It feels good to have made something."

edit: adding in a relevant C.S. Lewis quote as well, on enjoying "childish things"

“Critics who treat ‘adult’ as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

Join my Cringe Challenge here! Cringey Pony OC Challengefigured my last status would work better as a journal SO
I've got a little challenge for all my artists that love making MLP OCs~
if you want to, i'd sure appreciate if ya'll would design the "cringiest", most "mary-sue/gary stu" pony your brain can concoct, and submit your design to this journal in a comment. I'd like to do a piece about how cringe culture restricts our freedom as makers and consumers of content, so I'll be picking one of your "cringe" designs and drawing it! I'd like to make clear that this is not meant to be mean-spirited, your mock OC will be drawn respectfully, and hopefully be used to get those haters of "cringe-y OCs" to question why they feel the need to mock other people's harmless interests.
You can go however nuts you want. Break every OC-designing rule, design however you goddamn want. Wanna show me a rainbow-haired alicorn with jewel eyes and two sets of wings? Go for it! Make a black and red overpowered dark lord that cries ink black tears. This OC was designed by , their original (much better, lol) drawing is here:

edit: comments disabled because it's late and i'm tired, and some of ya'll are getting real huffy about a drawing of a rainbow horse with a flowery anti-bullying message. will probably turn comments back on later. For now i think i'm good on being told to kill myself. Great job convincing me cringe culture is totes necessary tho!

For a while I've been trying to figure out what colors I should use for one of my characters (not MLP but my own thing). While I got the basic colors I want to use I've been (and still) worrying about how colorful I want her to end up cause I don't want her to be unappealing. After seeing this though while it hasn't taken away the stress completely it did give me a bit more confidence on choosing colors.

Oh sweeite this is old and your just bringing it up again. Again, This is the internet. Of course people are gonna say retarded things like "CRINGEEE" or "CANCER LOL" which is funny if you don't take stuff seriously. The reason why people say cringe or cancer is because how the people act and what they do, And if you try to help these characters then they'll attack you. But again you don't have to please people on here if you're just doing it for fun. Yea people are young, But what'd you expect from this place? Do people think the internet can be a happy place. Well, yes and no. If you know what you're doing lmao
Only a MORON would think people would be safe from the internet, Ya see what I did there ^-^ You can learn from being in a "cringe" phase but if people shove it down your throat then yes, It would be fucking annoying. But people whining about it. I don't know honey

Cancer and cringe isn't supposed to be funny? It is literally always used in disgust, anyone who uses it to be funny are nothing but edgy teenagers chiming in on a fad.  If people attacking young artists for drawing what they like (or "cringe" like you mouth breathers call it) are the so called arguments that can be used to destroy these claims, you're a bigger moron than i thought. Doesn't matter if your comment is five years old, still an idiotic comment and people have the right to reply to it. Upset by it? Sounds like a you problem~~~~~(Insert meme here that has nothing to do with the argument)

Cringe culture is awful. It's straight up disgusting and it literally makes children wanna give up art? Like when I was 12 I would draw my lil shitty doodles and post them on twitter and id like??? legit get attacked and called disgusting names JUST for not knowing how art works. I've seen so many cases of people saying they stopped drawing when they were younger because of this type of behavior and i dont understand how people can support cringe culture??

instead of telling somebody that their art and ocs is "cancer" or "cringe" consider this! get a hobby and go outside lmao.

I agree completely as far as writing and drawing goes... I just find it annoying when people try to rp extremely OP characters in settings they don't fit into, but that's just my opinion. If your rp partner is fine with that then by all means go all out.  I don't really understand why people call others OC's  cringey in drawings and fan-fiction though. I mean, if you don't like the character that's your opinion, you don't have to go bashing others creative spirits. No one if forcing you to look at their art or read their stories...

Masternc In reply to ??? [2018-06-13 05:10:52 +0000 UTC]

Um... I like the art... but I think it’s just something you shouldn’t care about. I personally think acting like other people can’t find what your doing as “cringe” sort of defeats the whole reason it exists. Cringe isn’t something new. All artists have always dealt with making something that is just sort of awkward, bad, or plain old terrible. And your problem with Mary Sues hammers home how completely ignorant you are to what art is. You are not just drawing. Your designing. Your a creator. So if someone cringes, or someone called your charecter a Mary Sue. Those two things are completely diffrent ways of saying diffrent things.
Examples: cringe is an opinion. People cringe at certain people’s art. That’s just a thing that happens. Just ignore it. If you want other people to stop cringing, your simply saying “I don’t wanna conform, even though your just giving me an opinion, so all of us should hate you till you conform to my ideas.”
Mary Sue: an actual problem in the Oc community. And it’s a problem. Mary Sues are charecters where the artist completely throws the charecter out of their art. And makes it just... art. Then it’s  not an OC it’s a painting. And the OC needs some sort of weakness, Or character traits,Or they aren't a character.

Anyway. For criticism of art. I like your art. But your message is littered with discrepancies. It turns it into a simple rant. And one that makes artists worse off if they listen to it.

Erm.......you kinda missed the while point of this thing. So what if someone makes a Mary sue character so long as they like they made? A lot of my characters started out as Mary Sues and Chad Everyteens, and i was proud of them. And as i grew as an artist, so did my characters, and they changed from the Marys and Chads to each having individual personalities. But that wouldn't have happened if I'd taken "advice" and gotten rid of them because they were Marys.

IN SHORT, who are you to say what we can and cannot make?

It was basically about how an artist can't draw and upload Undertale-related art without people whining about it in the comment section. I oftentimes find myself thinking "Why do we even say the phrase 'common sense' anymore? It doesn't seem to common, if you ask me."

I seen some of this deviant cringe compilations. They are many times valid issues pointed out in a very rude non-constructive way. They will disappear or change eventually. FandomMenace left, SolarSand is now criticizing instead of insulting and being an ass. But this type of stuff wont disappear. Thats the result of internet freedom we need to learn to live with for the sake of keeping our freedom. Best thing to do is like this post. Even tho I find your OC cringy . I dont like ponies at all to be honest. But being an ass about it would be kinda hypocritical cos im just another cringey artist for many.

This is talking about cringe culture, which is pretty much adults telling beginning Artist to kill them selves because their art or OC isn't "their standard". THAT IS NOT CRITICISM!. This picture is not talking about genuine criticism. You are very confused, that or you have no idea what ACTUAL cringe culture is.

I fucked up there, since I forgot what my actual argument was at the time, but now that I remember, let me try to summarize it so I don't create a huge wall of text.

They're using freedom of speech in order to silence someone using freedom of speech, kind of like Evergreen State College. I don't agree with people who do cringe compilations, but I still think that as long as they aren't doing stuff that'll get them in trouble with free speech (like shouting fire in a crowded building), that they are still in the border of free speech.

That’s bullying, and honestly, artists should stop pretending it’s a real drag. Let’s be honest and admit this is only s problem when you make it one. And your letting these people who use the cringe culture on others know that it works. You know what your ending? Any chances at cringe culture lovers to stop. I wasn’t defending it, I was telling you to stop using it. Because if we use this as an excuse for artists to not draw, then almost all of us wouldn’t be artists.

It's interesting how people are insisting this is some anti-criticism piece. It's exactly what it says on the tin. A statement against cringe culture. Cringe culture is purposefully crapping on someone's harmless interests because you consider them uncool. This drawing is against bullying. It's not even pretending to be against criticism.
