Description

I dunno if you guessed it, but I like drawing cute little ponies....fanart of a children's cartoon. And every so often, someone feels the need to tell me that my personal interest is stupid, childish, cancerous....."cringe-y". Boy howdy, do I hear that word tossed around a lot. Cringe, cringe, cringe. We're all afraid of making something cringe-worthy. Something that could end up in those lovely "Bad OC" cringe compilations. I see other artists, especially young creators, getting policed and attacked for creating something that could-gasp!- be interpreted as the dreaded Mary Sue. So artists stifle themselves. Can't make your OC too colorful. Don't you dare make them related to a canon character! Better watch that backstory, lest somebody decry your character as an edgelord. You can have a nerdy interest, but you better not be too fucking passionate about it. Watch yourself. Don't be too different. Don't be cringe-y.

So here's my question to ye gatekeepers of content, ye knowers of all things cringe-worthy, ye adamant enforcers of creative conformity...........Who cares?

Really. Why. Why is "cringe" an issue? So what if someone makes an edgy black-and-red OC, or a sparkly mary sue alicorn princess? So what if somebody makes up an over-powered self-insert and ships them with a canon character? So what if somebody dares to be unironically passionate about a fandom or interest considered less-than-cool? Who cares if people have imperfect, cliche-riddled characters they love?

Cringe culture is mean-spirited. It demands creators conform. It's perpetuated by people who, quite oddly, get really bent out of shape at the sight of people unironically enjoying harmless things.

I say forget it. Trample it. Let people have fun. Especially don't be cruel to young creators- nobody learns to be a skilled artist or writer overnight. And this is by no means a statement against criticism, even harsh criticism.....but there's a big, big difference between giving constructive criticism, vs choosing to crap on somebody for having a "cringe-y" interest. Clicking on someone's work to tell them that it's cringe, or cancer, or that they should kill themselves.....that's not criticism. It's cruelty. The only point of it is to discourage and shame creators, often young, vulnerable ones. There is nothing heroic or helpful about this behavior. This is what I am standing against. To make things clear, I am not anti-criticism. I am anti-bullying.

Idk. I'm a teacher with an Art Education degree, and I believe one of the most important things is to encourage people's interest in the arts, not push them away (out of a mean-spirited attempt to seem cooler by proxy). My favorite Mister Rogers quote (applies to artists of all ages):

"Do you like to draw with crayons? I'm not very good at it. But it doesn't matter. It's the fun of doing it that's important. Now, I wouldn't have made that if I just thought about it. No matter how anybody says it is....It feels good to have made something."

edit: adding in a relevant C.S. Lewis quote as well, on enjoying "childish things"

“Critics who treat ‘adult’ as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

Join my Cringe Challenge here! Cringey Pony OC Challengefigured my last status would work better as a journal SO
I've got a little challenge for all my artists that love making MLP OCs~
if you want to, i'd sure appreciate if ya'll would design the "cringiest", most "mary-sue/gary stu" pony your brain can concoct, and submit your design to this journal in a comment. I'd like to do a piece about how cringe culture restricts our freedom as makers and consumers of content, so I'll be picking one of your "cringe" designs and drawing it! I'd like to make clear that this is not meant to be mean-spirited, your mock OC will be drawn respectfully, and hopefully be used to get those haters of "cringe-y OCs" to question why they feel the need to mock other people's harmless interests.
You can go however nuts you want. Break every OC-designing rule, design however you goddamn want. Wanna show me a rainbow-haired alicorn with jewel eyes and two sets of wings? Go for it! Make a black and red overpowered dark lord that cries ink black tears. This OC was designed by , their original (much better, lol) drawing is here:

edit: comments disabled because it's late and i'm tired, and some of ya'll are getting real huffy about a drawing of a rainbow horse with a flowery anti-bullying message. will probably turn comments back on later. For now i think i'm good on being told to kill myself. Great job convincing me cringe culture is totes necessary tho!

I really needed this today. I've been writing a fanfiction and I've been too embarrassed to really share past the first few parts with anyone other than one friend, but now I realize that it really is just for fun, and so I'm going to post it. Who cares if someone thinks it's badly written? I know I like it, and maybe someone else out there will too.

It also made me feel like i can like my little pony, paw patrol and other so called "childish" shows, without a care! <3 I feel a lot much better about half my oc's! My profile is a picture of Furay, an oc i made but decided to ditch for a while do to some people calling it cringy and ugly colored, after reading this, i decided to give her some more love.

PREACH IT, PEGASISTER!   Sure, it can be OK and fun to goof on some things and people sometimes — but there's definitely a fine line between jokey but genuine critique and just being hateful. Misery loves company, indeed, I guess.

Your Princess Darkshadow looks absolutely beautiful and thank you for taking the time to draw this and share her. You're a very talented artist and creative mind in general. Hope to see much more passionate art from you! And not to mention thank you for saying what a lot, lot more people have been thinking. Make love, not cringe!

i still fall into the habit at reacting that way to stuff others enjoy or even things i enjoy and it's been (embarrassingly) hard to break out of that negative mindset. So I'm really happy too see more ppl pushing to just let things be and let ppl be happy!!! I haven't seen MLP but low-key have always wanted to draw in that art style bc it's so cute so maybe I'll give it a go!!!

Words can't describe how much I agree with this. When it comes to making OCs, I've always felt like that as long as I have fun making it and I love it in the end, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. I mean, it's my OC. I'll make it however I want. Red and black or rainbow? Check. Alicorn prince(ss)? Check. Edgy backstory? Check. Related to canon character? Check. Overpowered? Double check. In the end, it doesn't matter what they think; it's what I think. And I think I love it.

DingoBreath In reply to ??? [2018-06-13 03:04:03 +0000 UTC]

cringe culture is really annoying because it's usually grown ass adults making fun of kids doing harmless shit like cosplaying or drawing (especially in that ""tumblr"" style people seem to hate so much). girls enjoying bands or fandoms  is also seen as cringey and it's really sad, lol. i know teens liking one direction was considered cringe a couple years ago.

i used to be into homestuck and i wanted to cosplay soooo bad but i'd see those pics that people take and made fun of, and it definitely kept me from ever being comfortable going out and having fun in that regard.

these people who are into cringe culture end up being gross themselves and it's ironic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lopoddity In reply to DingoBreath [2018-06-13 03:20:32 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. It's so transparent. Just people so damn pissy that other people have the nerve to have fun. Making fun of any fandom that falls outside "acceptable" nerd culture, hating on "tumblr" art style, blatantly hating young girls and their interests so, so much. Make-up? Cringe. One Direction? Cringe. Homestuck, Undertale, Cuphead, celebrity youtubers, fanfiction, cosplay? Cringe, cringe, cringe.

It all comes from these people secretly feeling quite insecure, and it just rankles me how they feel the need to root their entire identity on bringing other people down. There's nothing cool about being mean and above-it-all, it's passion that makes people interesting.

I have been fighting to not make a kitsune oc due to like the cringe and crap you get for making them.
Like I enjoy foxes with lots of tails that are all sparkly and shit.

Like I've just wanted to make her for fun and not a serious thing a part of my story crap thing.
It really is this fear that makes me never want to do it and extremely cautions of what I draw.

being creative or original is something artists have to grow into like anything else.
like point me to a young artist who /didn't/ make a mary sue or trope-y snowflake OC at the age of 15 lol. welcome to the internet? lmao
idk man, we've all been there at some point creatively bc oh hey it's fun & part of a normal learning process? i really don't get why pointing this out has become such a dedicated hobby.
also, i feel like if ppl have to rip on someone (especially young) to make themselves look cool by comparison then that alone speaks volumes.

I wanna make more stuff of my edgy MLP oc but i also don't wanna put up with flak for it.

it's such bullshit that fandom elistist tote around """cringe culture"""

im sorry but OP OCs, nexgens, self insert, self shipping, etc aren't cringy.

Being a creep and drawing genuinly harmful and creepy things is cringy.

I love oc x cannon ships. I do it. I self insert myself with cannon characters.
And I have really powerful ocs that have a lot of cool powers. And are hard to defeat.
And I have cliche ocs that are misunderstood emo teens that get bullied.
And I have really sexy girl ocs that hate to get hit on but secretly love it.

Yes it's all cliche. It's all cringe. But I love it all.

It makes me feel so glad to see someone else wants to destroy this cringe culture.

I'm currently making a story, not a complete one at all but hey I'd be willing to share and get some tips if anyone reading this is interested in helping, but it revolves around a cast named Artemis, Ember, and Griffin.

And in this story I have a lost angsty/edgy chapters, Artie dies in one and meets a Reaper who ends up becoming his boyfriend in later chapters. Said Reaper, Contra, who's brother is /The/ Grim Reaper and boy what doesn't get edgier and more cringe worthy than death him-fucking-self?

Fuck cringe culture! If I want to make a character death and make a character date a bringer of death than so fucking be it! If I wanna make flashy ass flying whales I'll do it! Ain't nobody gonna tell me I can't!
