Description
everybody's favorite family of bushy-eyebrowed jerkwads~
Once upon a time, there lived a fiery young mare by the name of Coral Carcharodon. Bored by her peaceful seaside village, as well as the friendly chumps that resided within it, Coral decided to pack a bag and set sail from home. She wanted to be a seafarer, like in the stories her grandmother old! Battling sea monsters, searching for treasure- and best of all, no horde of little sisters to pester her, nothing but the wind on her back, and adventure in her heart!
What actually ended up happening was Coral falling into a gang of pirates, a rotten, cantankerous crew of the very worst scum and villainy....and she ended up liking it just fine. She especially liked the captain, a wicked and cunning stallion by the name of Morgan Maelstrom. Their story was a fantastic tale of grand romance, robbery, and riches beyond belief.
.....Right up until Coral violently double-crossed him, then fled to retire comfortably by the seaside. In tow with her was a heavy chest of gold, her young son Ishmael, and the foal growing in her belly (her main reason for leaving, really. Turns out the pirate life doesn't lend itself well to raising children.)
For a while, life was good. Coral hid away her wealth, and lovingly raised her two sons. Ishmael in particular found a best friend in his new little brother, Buck.
Unfortunately, one night, during a howling thunderstorm, dear old daddy comes knocking.
Little Ishmael and teeny Buck answer the door. Morgan greets them with a warm, fatherly embrace.....that could become a lot tighter, should Coral refuse to come with him.
On the condition her children remain unharmed, Coral begrudgingly accompanies the captain. She kisses both her boys and tells them to be brave.
A few days later, Morgan reappears to his sons, sadly reporting that their mother had been lost to a storm.
The children barely have time to process what this means- little Buck fearfully asks his brother what'll happen to them now- when Morgan merrily bundles them up and says they'll be coming to work for him, of course! It's really the least he can do, lads.
What followed was a very lonely few years out at sea, performing endless, back-breaking labor, cleaning up after a crew of drunken criminals, forever under the watchful, unsettling eye of the captain. But the brothers have each other, and that makes it bearable. At the very least, they have each other to hide away bits of food, to help weasel the other out of punishments, to cry quietly against when the thoughts of Mum can't be squashed down. At the very least, they have each other.
You can imagine, then, Ishmael's terror when he hears Morgan playing poker with another captain- and Morgan, unwillingly to part with his gold, bets Buck. Morgan is a clever gambler, but this captain is more clever still- and he wins.
Buck will be given away in the morning. Ishmael has to act tonight.
Buck never did find out what happened that night. He only remembers his big brother shaking him awake that morning, and the two of them making their escape. If he strains his mind hard enough, he can remember Ishmael's wild eyes and trembling hooves, and a very faint smell of blood.
Ishmael vows to leave the past behind him, and the boys somehow make their way back home, among Coral's old family. Ishmael is determined to find a safer, quieter life for him and his brother both- something traditional, and sensible. Boring, if need be. To keep himself and his little brother out of trouble forever. Something like.....fishing.
And the rest is history~
random family facts (mostly supplied by the lovely :
-Cutthroat's emphasis on toughness stems from moments when he wasn't tough enough.
-The Carcharodons get their family name from Coral, not Morgan. As previously established, it’s tradition for Carcharodon stallions to give their sons strange, human-y names (Buck, Ishmael, Bruce, Butch). However, after Coral's father sired a whooping thirteen daughters and no sons, he finally waves the white flag and gives his oldest daughter Coral his last name to carry on. Coral happily continued this tradition with her sons.
Buck broke tradition though, when he was the one to name his daughter, Eliza (though to be fair, he and Radhi did think they were going to have a son) :
-Fey originally named Bruce "Ripple", because of his small size at birth. As Cutthroat was out to sea, Fey gave birth alone in their gloomy little home, but she did have a wonderful few days to fall in love with her teeny, meek foal. When Cutthroat returned, he abruptly changed the name to something tougher and more no-nonsense.
-Bruce was officially disowned by his father when he chose to marry Stormy. Cutthroat says Bruce is a disgrace, and has no right to call himself a Carcharodon. For a time, Bruce did consider letting go of the family name that'd given him so much grief, and adopting Stormy's instead....before he decided that he didn't feel like discarding such an important piece of himself, and hey, more importantly, fuck you old man. He continues using it in defiance, and has passed it on to his own son, hoping for a better future for the family legacy.
-Bruce is about fifteen years older than Eliza. She is still a teenager when Wave and Finn are small foals.
-Someday, after Cutthroat dies and Fey begins her timid rehabilitation, she and Radhi will become the very best of friends~
-When Wave Rider was in her young teens (when she briefly experimented with “girlier stuff” while she was figuring herself out), she obsessively tweezed her family’s trademark eyebrows (passed on for GENERATIONS) and was quite embarrassed by them. She eventually grows out of this little bit of self consciousness and now they don’t bother her at all. She may really enjoy using them as a favorite insult to asshole guys “mate, my eyebrows are thicker then your dick”. (Also Wave’s short lived girly phase may be part of the reason Finn is so comfortable cross-dressing. Wavey miiiiiight have used her lil bro to test make up on before applying it to herself to make sure she was doing it right. Not that Finnie minded. It remains as some of his favorite memories with his sister)
-Someday, young Finn will happen upon an dusty old map, drawn by great-grandmother Coral herself, supposedly leading to her secret treasure. Or, possibly, certain death. It's a coin Finnie's all too willing to flip!
- Poor Finnie thought growing out a beard-mane would make him look as imposing and majestic as those legendary sea stallions before him...considering the fact that even ODDBALL had a snorted laugh escape the first time he saw Finn after he grew it out, it failed rather epically.

I love your backstories that accompanies every piece of art
That's so sad! But then, Coral should have settled with her boys somewhere more inland and left no further clues to follow. She did double cross a pirate captain after all. I get this was such a traumatic chain of events for Ishmael, still doesn't excuse his many mistakes and attitude though.
I'm kind of glad Buck doesn't remember that very well.
Can we see more of Coral's life? She sounds so interesting!

Even though I've never really been a fan of the mlp universe, your art / story you've built with these characters have 100% caught my attention...
To the point where I've actually developed an emotional attachment to what you've created here
Not only is everything well thought out and believable, but your artwork itself is just downright gorgeous and draws my attention in so much. Point is, I've been following you [ silently, whoops ] for a year or two now, and there hasn't been a single moment where I didn't feel captivated with your work <3

Knowing that Cutthroat was told that his mother was lost to the sea (aka drowned) it really paints a picture on how much Butch’s death by drowning effected him.
It’s one to lose your child, but due to drowning, like your mother (supposedly)? That’s rough.

Ah, man! I love this backstory I haven't seen MLP much in a while, but I do love your future fanverse and this is especially my favorite part of it :
Though, I do worry that, now that we got a good sense of his life and hardships, people will start sympathizing with Cutthroat and ignoring the pain he caused his family. But, at least you do not excuse his actions even when we get a new understanding of him, so no worries there
*looking at the additions to the story in the comments* I'mma be dying to see more great-granny pirate captain Coral sometime
Dumb question, but I wonder....is Fey's coltfriend Nautilus still a thing? 'Cause I'm surprised he's not here in this family tree, at least in the current time

I am so sorry, but i've been looking at this and getting IDEAS!
and...well...here xD
To make his story credible, Morgan threw Coral overboard in the midst of a terrible storm. Chuckling maliciously as he called after her as she was swept away, telling her he was taking his boys, and she can die knowing they'll be his.
Years later, Bruce and Wave Rider are having a father-daughter research trip when a storm throws them horribly off course and causes thier boat to be destroyed amongst a coral reef. They make it to the shores of a nearby island, though thier transport is now unsalvagable.
They salvage what they can, and explore the island. Eventually they come across a small weathered shack. As they approach the door opens and an elderly mare steps out. Her coat brown, but her long mane and tail greyed with age. Her face bears a white marking.
She looks at them in surprise, but her eyes focus intently on Bruce. Stpping forwards for a closer look, she utters a name.
"Ishmael?"

Adding to this, the reason Coral never reunited with her sons even though she DID eventually escape the island (by "roping a couple of sea turtles". Why yes hallo Jack Sparrow reference), and after years of obsessively, murderously, tracking down Morgan's ship, she finally finds it and forcibly boards, killing anypony dumb enough to stand in the way of pure maternal fury and years of terror over the thought of what could have happened to her babies...imagine her utter devastation when she discovers Morgan long dead, and her two precious boys gone without the faintest trace. Having no reason to hope or suspect otherwise, Coral has to accept that her sons are dead, perhaps they never even lived past that night she was forced to leave them, and never returns to her childhood home (where she has no idea they ended back up) out of despair and guilt. She spends the remainder of her days returned to the sea as a cold, ruthless sea captain until finally in her old age she finds an isolated island to live out her last years....until fate most unexpectedly brings two very unexpected visitors to her door.
Eventually reuniting with Buck was a beautiful, bittersweet moment for mother and son, and for a long, long time Coral just held him and sobbed (and Buck may have done just the same thing). Of course though....she never gets to see her oldest son, as he has been dead for a while now. Her heart breaks over discovering this, as well as hearing about how cruel life had been to him and how it changed him (though unexpectedly her and Fey end up adoring each other), but she is determined not to miss out on anything else with her descendants and Coral is warmly welcomed back into their family (Finnie looks up to her so much you don't even fucking know), and her golden years are spent completely happy and loved. Though a part of her will always mourn, and love, her little wildberry.

Kalitamai In reply to RoboHeather [2019-04-06 15:26:34 +0000 UTC]
Oooh, now that is a good add-on!
I was initially thinking she washes ashore on the island and was alone for so long(Though i may have also thought that perhaps Morgan blackmailed her with the health of her boys into spending a few nights with him and she ends up having a daughter who's cliche'd name is Sheila...cause Oatstralia, why not xD).
But the vengeful, grieving mother idea here is absolutely awesome! Grief can make folks do some crazy things after all! Awesome Jack-Sparrow Grandmom, the kids love her stories!
ETA: Turns out at some point Vengeful Captain Coral had a run-in with Daring Do, and is featured in one of the books! They were both chasing the same treasure, though Daring-Do won out in the end, it made for a captivating and adventurous tale!
I did think that her eventual reunion with Buck would be incredibly tearful, and Coral would be the most absolutely doting grandmother/Greatgrandmother ever, to make up for so many lost years.
You have read my mind on that Ishmael would be gone by then too, and her heartbreak over his life.
After hearing from Buck how he and Ishmael escaped Morgan, and things she 'convinced' Morgan crews to tell her leads her to understand that Ishmael killed Morgan to save them both, but it forever scarred his mind, which could be reason for how Ishmael acted and treated people in his later years. Untreated PTSD.

I’m sorry, but all I can picture now is grandma Rainbow Dash coming over with her husband to meet their son-in-law’s newly refound family member....and Dash loosing her goddamn mind over meeting THE Captain Coral!!!! The tragic, legendary pirate queen that was the only pony to ever best the great Daring Do!!! (Maybe all that was slightly exaggerated and edited to sell a better story, but young Daring and Coral honestly had one hell of an adventure together once...complete with sword fights, ancient curses, treasure, and eventual betrayal maybe a lil lesbian stuff too who can say.) Dash eagerly sits down with the children as Coral grandly regales her past adventures

Not only would Dash get all fangirly, she'd go so far as to pull out her super special first edition copy of the book and ask for it to be signed by Captain Coral!
And then go track down Daring Do to get it signed, again(If she hadn't gotten it signed by Daring Do Already)! Making it even more special xD

I just...love after the kids go to bed, Rainbow point blank asks Coral if she and Daring ever knocked hooves because, (and Quibble agrees!), it was highly implied and a topic heatedly debated in the Daring Do fandom to this day. Coral gets one hell of a laugh out of this and casually confirms that they jumped each other's bones the third day after they met (Buck, nearby and unprepared to hear that from his elderly mother's mouth, nearly chokes to death on his mouthful of tea).

morgan...like the pirate??? EDIT: ook I read the first part, and the only thing that annoys me is that Ismahel have been saying that fishing was a family tradition. With that, I imagined a long history of fisher ponies, but no, he is literally the only one who decided to do that job so...I don't know, It sounds like a big plot mistake to me now. But the rest of the story is amazing!! I love pirates!!

Cutthroat is exaggerating a bit. While the Carcharodon (Coral’s family) are mostly fishing folk, they don’t consider it some rigid family tradition to always be adhered to. Some family members are blacksmiths, some are laborers, some are hunters, some are knitters. Coral was a pirate.
Cutthroat lied about the family tradition aspect as a means to keep Buck (and Bruce) in line.
