Description
hey watch me try to cram way too many wurdz on some horse doodles
Magic is alive in every creature, but it cannot be utilized properly without a solid conductor. Non-ponies (especially griffons and hippogriffs) are very innovative in this regard, and use tools like wands, staffs, and crystals to channel and cast magic. Others, like zebras, cast spells in the form of potions. For ponies, spell-casting ability comes built in.
Earth ponies can conduct magic through their hooves, which lends itself to bouts of extreme strength, connection to the natural world, as well as influence over the harvest. Pegasi conduct magic through their wings, allowing them to generate enough lift to get their heavy bodies off the ground, as well as manipulate the elements. A unicorn's horn, however, offers an unrivaled means of precision spell-casting. Horns allow unicorns to draw on the well of magic within themselves and direct it outward in the form of commands (spells). Spells vary in complexity and are nearly infinite in possibility. A clever unicorn can "program" a new spell by issuing a directive in their mind. The bone core within a unicorn's horn acts as a lightning rod for their magic. Magic is drawn from their bodies into the core, charged and amplified via the conductive keratin sheath, then fired outward, to go do whatever the unicorn has "coded" the spell to do (or explode, as is sometimes the case with finicky new spells).
Unicorns are the fussiest and most fastidious of all ponies (though of course there are exceptions to the rule). While earth ponies woo mates via gifts of flowers and food, and pegasi through flashy displays of flight, unicorns are melodramatic romantics. They place great stock in lengthy, drawn-out courtships with lots of gift-giving (precious gems are a must), dancing, shows of poetry and song. Unicorns sometimes engage in (mostly) theatrical "fencing" to fight off rival suitors, and some courting pairs will fence horns and duel with magic to win the other's hoof in marriage. Rivalry in considered very romantic among unicorns, the weird little drama queens.
Unicorns are snobby lil snooty-patooties that take themselves very seriously, please don't tell them how dinky and cute their horns are (under risk of being gored)

I always love how you do these headcanon pieces with the different races and creatures. You put a lot of thought into it and it paints a bigger picture of the world. I also love how you include different examples like Tempest's broken horn and the Kirin's antlers

insert hee hee haw haw here after i ask this but does horn size matter? is it a age thing? power? status symbol? im genuinely curious about it (at least in the pandoraverse; not sure if the show has canonically covered this at all lol)

Juuust checking. I hope you don't mind me poking holes/asking questions. But if their horns are incredibly sensitive wouldn't filing them hurt?

Lopoddity In reply to HeyYew [2019-09-03 08:55:59 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, I think I phrased myself poorly. A horn is basically a chunk of sensitive bone wrapped in the same protein that makes up our hair and fingernails. If you press the bed of your nail to a hot surface, you can still feel the heat, right? Yet your nails done hurt if you clip them. A horn is like that. Theyβre sensitive to vibrations, temperature, and changes in ambient magic- but filing wouldnβt hurt, because youβd just be shaving away protein with no nerve endings. Itβs the inner part of the horn thatβs sensitive- the keratin sheath protects it.

I guess they are sensitive to vibration/impact, since it would be felt on the core while filling just shaves the keratin off. Similar to breaking a nail past the "overgrowth" of it.

The idea of making horns like brain cells with the biological protector to focus electricity is brilliant...but at the same time I giggle at the idea of horns being "personal parts" xdΒ Β

Fun fact : The term 'Alicorn' we use for winged unicorns is actually the term used for the "bone core" of unicorn horns in ancient latin mythology.

Always so pretty~ About the Kirin, how long does the antler shedding/regrowing cycle last? Like, how long does it take for the horn to grow back to the size it was before, and how long after that does it take to shed again? I'd imagine it's a seasonal thing, but I'm just wondering what they'd do in the antler downtime. If they use them as much as unicorns do it'd be pretty jarring not being able to manipulate your environment by levitating everything. Manual labor!
Side note: Hope you're not suffering the same way I am about Dorian landing or not. The hype made us spend over a grand for supplies, it better damn well be worth it.

Lopoddity In reply to Selvira [2019-09-03 08:29:12 +0000 UTC]
Kirin antlers take a few months to come in fully, but there always remains a lil nub of bone they can still use magic out of- though their abilities are strongest when the antler is full grown.
...I donβt think thatβs the right attitude to have about a hurricane. You really, really, really do not want a hurricane to hit you. The damage takes months to clean up, power can take weeks to return, people can and do die. People have already died. No amount of money spent should make you want to be hit so it can all be βworth itβ. Purchased items can be returned, but the impact of a massive force of nature cannot.

I know, I know, it's not the right way to go about it. I know it's just about devastated the Bahamas, possibly changing it forever and leaving me only with the childhood memories of summer trips for Daddy's work, and now we have to wait for it to hit us here in Florida. But the media's just been hyping the whole thing up and saying it's going to be one of the biggest things ever, and we're just waiting and waiting and praying that we'll make it through unscathed that the fact that nothing has happened is just... frustrating. I just want to start the cleanup process and get life back to normal. That call it the calm before the storm, but how do you deal with it when you were never calm in the first place? I'm sorry about my previous attitude, Irma was a very different experience for me and I'm just waiting for that to happen again when it so far has not.

I agree with this as when Hurricane Maria passed through Puerto Rico, it was a disaster! Sure, my family lives in one of the klest affected zones and were are currently back to normal but there are parts of the island that are still affected even two years later.
