Description

hey watch me try to cram way too many wurdz on some horse doodles

Magic is alive in every creature, but it cannot be utilized properly without a solid conductor. Non-ponies (especially griffons and hippogriffs) are very innovative in this regard, and use tools like wands, staffs, and crystals to channel and cast magic. Others, like zebras, cast spells in the form of potions. For ponies, spell-casting ability comes built in.

Earth ponies can conduct magic through their hooves, which lends itself to bouts of extreme strength, connection to the natural world, as well as influence over the harvest. Pegasi conduct magic through their wings, allowing them to generate enough lift to get their heavy bodies off the ground, as well as manipulate the elements. A unicorn's horn, however, offers an unrivaled means of precision spell-casting. Horns allow unicorns to draw on the well of magic within themselves and direct it outward in the form of commands (spells). Spells vary in complexity and are nearly infinite in possibility. A clever unicorn can "program" a new spell by issuing a directive in their mind. The bone core within a unicorn's horn acts as a lightning rod for their magic. Magic is drawn from their bodies into the core, charged and amplified via the conductive keratin sheath, then fired outward, to go do whatever the unicorn has "coded" the spell to do (or explode, as is sometimes the case with finicky new spells).

Unicorns are the fussiest and most fastidious of all ponies (though of course there are exceptions to the rule). While earth ponies woo mates via gifts of flowers and food, and pegasi through flashy displays of flight, unicorns are melodramatic romantics. They place great stock in lengthy, drawn-out courtships with lots of gift-giving (precious gems are a must), dancing, shows of poetry and song. Unicorns sometimes engage in (mostly) theatrical "fencing" to fight off rival suitors, and some courting pairs will fence horns and duel with magic to win the other's hoof in marriage. Rivalry in considered very romantic among unicorns, the weird little drama queens.

Unicorns are snobby lil snooty-patooties that take themselves very seriously, please don't tell them how dinky and cute their horns are (under risk of being gored)

This....
Is....
BEAUTIFUL.

As someone who plans on making a book involving Fantasy Creatures and exploring more of their culture, seeing a more descriptive gallery of Unicorn horns and the way their biology and culture ….it just... warms my heart.Β
You were able to put into words something that I have been pondering on whenever I see Tempest Shadows powerful sparks of magic not all the way solidifying in the movie, as well as describing what a horn would actually look like in universe.
Just...so many good things in here, I love it. Thank you so much for making it....

This is actually really interesting, I like the interaction you've included too - that's not something I've seen before - plus the interactions being driven by conscious decisions rather than instinct/a horse wouldn't/would do this. I think that's something that people often forget in their character/world building - it might not always make sense to do something but intelligent beings will do it anyway, like punching with our hands as you mentioned. They're our greatest tool, they're technically quite fragile (I socked the tendon of my thumb about two weeks ago, it still isn't right, wasn't even a very hard hit) but people will still try and mash them into other people if the occasion calls for it. Very cool to see!Β

Β Gotcha, that makes sense. SAI can be pretty buggy, especially if you pirate it like I used to. After shelling out 50$ for the license though, it seemed to get a lot better.Β

Ah! I use firealpaca too!!
If you don't mind me asking, how do you get the sketch-like lineart so, well, sketch-like???
And you mentioned just plain sketching your art and downloading it to draw over it, which I do the same as well, not lying (I can drop a few examples if you need proof)
How do you do the process because I'm trying to achieve something as close to that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lopoddity In reply to HoneyPupDragon [2019-09-03 01:05:25 +0000 UTC]

These sketches were all done digitally. The sketchy lineart comes from a custom brush I made in FireAlpaca (FA lets you create and modify your own brushes. I made one to work like charcoal)

Rosenbriar In reply to Lopoddity [2019-09-03 03:45:06 +0000 UTC]

I hope you won't mind me asking, but would you mind sharing the brush if possible?Β  Or do you have any idea how I could make a brush similar to yours?Β  Thank you!

HoneyPupDragon In reply to Rosenbriar [2019-09-04 03:34:30 +0000 UTC]

I was trying to word how to ask without sounding like I was prodding but you pretty said what I wanted to ask.
It's not easy using FireAlpaca and there aren't a lot of videos that guide you on how to use it.
So to know that Lop uses it is just mindblowing and very exciting because there's hope of achieving more with it!

Lopoddity In reply to Rosenbriar [2019-09-03 09:10:22 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I don’t actually remember what bitmap I used, I made a lot of them and didn’t give them especially helpful names. :/ I remember it took a few tries to get a brush that worked the way I wanted.

Basically FireAlpaca lets you import bitmaps to use as brushes. You can turn just about any small image into a brush, then play around with the settings. For my charcoal brush, I used a rough scratchy looking bitmap, turned on opacity by pressure, and toggle around with spacing based on how dark I want my lines to look.

(Just as a headcanon idea.)
