Hmm...if you're aiming for cutesy, I'd suggest rounding out the characters, regardless of their actual weight. Make them softer, cuddlier. Possibly also go more towards show style in regards to the faces. Earthsong9405 has a pretty good handle on it, if you haven't already seen her work.
